Splurge on changing table/dresser or glider?

My parents are generously giving us some money for the baby's nursery. Would you recommend investing in a high quality changing table/dresser or a glider? I think I could end up wanting to nurse in bed or just changing the baby on a changing pad. I also like the idea of getting a dresser with a removable changing top.  Any input would be appreciated :)
Thanks and Happy New Year!

  • I'd say splurge on the glider... But depending on your definition of splurge - you might be able to go sensible on both items and get them both.

  • I think both pieces are important to have. A dresser could be in the kid's room for years to come, while a glider will probably only be necessary for the first few years. But quality/comfort is important in a glider. You could be spending hours and hours sitting on it, while a low-quality dresser would probably be less bothersome.

I would try to get both a reasonable prices. But if you want to really splurge in one area, I'd say splurge on the glider and get a less expensive dresser. It doesn't even have to be a changing table. We're just going to put a changing pad on top of a regular dresser.

  • I don't think either item is necessary, We have a regular bedroom set in DD's room and we used the top of the long dresser (with a changing pad) for diaper changes.  That only lasted until 6 months when she was too squirmy and then we started diaper changing on the floor.  We also have a wooden rocking chair that I got at a garage sale.  Personally, I would want to invest in a furniture set that will last until your baby grows up.  Most people want to get rid of a changing table and a glider by the time a baby turns 2.

  • We had baskets around the house with diapers, wipes, and a changing pad in it to change both of our kids anywhere. We didn't want to go all the way upstairs if we were in the basement just to get to the changing table. We will do this again. We use our glider all the time...even now when my 2.5 year old wants to rock. :-)

  • I JUST finished a blog post about this since we ordered our furniture yesterday.

We splurged on a quality dresser and nightstand because our DD will have it until she moves out.  A changing table and glider will only be used for so long.
  • Do you think you will potentially use one for another child?  If so splurge on that item.  If I had to pick I would go glider.  A really nice one has great resale value.  Children's furniture especially dressers tend to be small and I have read get surprising less long term use than you would expect.

  • I love our glider and still use it with DD #1 for bedtime stories etc.  It was the only place I felt comfortable nursing after birth because I tore so badly.

I would definitely NOT splurge on a change table unless you are going for the dresser with a change pad on top.  The kid can use the dresser for many many years.  That I would splurge on.

  • Splurge on the glider! I lived on that thing the first year. You can just put a changing pad on top of any type of dresser.
  • Have you tried looking at the thrift stores in your area for dressers?  You can just sand and repaint one to match the color of your crib and put a changing table on top.  I wouldn't get a reg. changing table though, unless you got a hand me down, cause you only use them for so long.  Splurge on the glider...

  • also agree with previous posters - we used an old ikea dresser and sanded/painted it - then plopped on a non-skid rug pad and changing pad on top of the dresser.

This is exactly what we are doing...cheap Ikea dresser with a changing pad on top.  I've already expressed my deep desire for a specific glider that I found at BRU.  I could have slept in it at the store it was so comfortable, and nice enough to make a good piece of furniture in our living area once we outgrow it in the nursery.  I didn't have a glider or rocker for my first and I wish I had!

THIS exactly!! Try to find both reasonably and do both! I as well STILL live in my glider and DS is 19 months old. We nursed in that chair alllllllll the time and now we read books and sing songs at bed time. But we also have a quality made double dresser that had room for a changing pad and a basket of diapering essentials. I spent WAY more on the dresser just because I knew that would be the only dresser I had to ever buy him. I found a REALLY nice upholstered glider on Craig's list that the lady NEVER used and I only spent $100 on it. So just search around and keep your eyes peeled for good deals :)
  • Both are important to or were with my first son. You don't need to splurge for quality though https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=17200516&cp=2255957.2273443.2255986.2256276&parentPage=family this is my glider it lasted through my son and 2 moves and is still working well

  • I practically lived in my glider with both kids. Being comfortable for a gazillions night time feedings was a must for me. With LO1 and 2 we did have a changing table (used the same for both). I sold it when we got rid of all of our baby stuff though. I do not plan on buying another. We still have the dresser they both used bc I saved it for their toy room for dress up clothes and what not. It will be going in the nursery with a changing bad and basket on the top.

  • I'd definitely go with glider over expensive table. Plus finding a great used dresser and then making it your own could be a fun DIY project for you and your DH.

I have a feeling I'm going to be living in my glider if my son is anything like I was as a baby. My mom had to rock me all night because I refused to sleep in the crib.

  • We splurged on an upholstered glider/recliner that will look great anywhere in the house. It will prob end up as my reading chair in the years to come. Absolutely worth it!!!

  • I would splurge on a rocker/glider.  DD slept in her crib once we brought her home, so I was in her room nursing a lot in our rocker.  We're using it for this next baby, and it will go in our living room once it's done in the nursery (or it will be used if we have more)  so we'll definitely get a lot more use out of it.  For me I wanted to be super comfortable at 3 am (and 1 am, and 6 am, etc.) and I found that there was a pretty good difference in comfort for $ in rockers.  For dressers, it seems like you can get good quality without splurging a lot.  We found a floor model dresser at Pier 1 that was originally $500, but it had some scuffs in the top.  They discounted it about 75% and then it went on sale soon, so we waited for that and paid around $130 for the dresser.  If you look around and time things right you can get some good deals!

  • A dresser or a glider, but not a changing table (which is technically different than a regular dresser). The former pieces can exist in your home as functional pieces long after your baby is out of diapers.

  • Another point is a glider/rocking chair that you used to rock your baby to sleep will make an excellent heirloom to pass down to your son or daughter when they have kids. I used mine from my mother, and it's very special to me. It's worth a splurge, in my opinion.
