Holy heartburn, Batman

Is there anything that I can do for heartburn?  This is not a problem that I normally have, so I'm not sure.  I've been getting it throughout my pregnancy, but right now it's so painful that it feels like I'm being stabbed in the chest and neck.  I took some Tums and tried sipping liquids, but this is bordering on unbearable.  Any advice?  I'm not even sure what caused it this time - I haven't eaten for a while.

  • I've not had it yet and remember Tums working pretty well for me plus it had extra calcium.  I hope you get some relief soon!

  • Try some ginger candy, it should help with your digestion. And I occasionally have reflux and have found that taking a bite of ice cream usually helps as strange as it sounds.
  • Thanks, all!  @Bstop I've heard that dairy helps, so that makes sense!

  • I was okayed for prilosec but not zantac for my last pregnancy. I started taking it the other day with this LO, bc it HURTS, man! Last time, I had it SO bad out of the blue one day, that I cried for hours, and honestly thought about going to the hospital. Super painful. Since that day, I have been able to manage it, but even with a prilosec a day, it's still there everyday of pregnancy. It was so awesome having DS and having it just GO AWAY. Unfortunately, it popped RIGHT back up as soon as I got the BFP this time.

    Good luck!

  • Your burn may be too extreme for food remedies, but if you don't go the pill route... Heartburn is when the composition inside your stomach is too acidic. You can combat acidity by eating foods that are basic in composition (bread, rice, apples, applesauce, etc)

  • I get the worst heartburn from not eating, snacking actually helps a great deal to keep it under control. wishing you well! its one of those fun little bits of miserable =(
  • Sounds like you are past the food helping level.  I have GERD and my pregnancy heartburn gets horrible, so I try to eat little bits often throughout the day, I take zantac 150 before bed and tums or bananas before then if needed.  I believe you can take zantac twice a day, but I'm holding that in reserve for 3rd tri when my heartburn amps up.

One big thing I would suggest, is that if you have trouble with heartburn at night, especially with stomach acid coming up your throat, try to rely on meds and not food for the last hour or so before bed.  The more that is in your stomach, the more pressure for it to work its way up.  Sleeping with an extra pillow can help at this point too.

  • Definitely talk to your Dr but with DS my Dr approved Zantac 150 twice a day. Like the PP I'm going to wait till 3rd tri to take it twice a day because it gets BAD! Right now I'm just doing tums and one Zantac if it gets bad. Milk definitely helps too.

  • My doc also said to take Zantac. I have silent reflux that makes it so its difficult for me to swallow food. It's so weird.
