Babies: 0 - 3 Months

6 weeks old and sleep

So DS is six weeks old and I am trying to figure out how to get longer sleep stretches from him at night. He is up every 2-3 hours still and it is killing me. I am an EP so he gets bottles of breast milk and is just over 10 pounds. He is gaining weight great and besides some reflux issues he is a happy baby. My first son was doing 4-5 hour stretches by this point.

  • How often is he eating during the day? Could you sneak in a dream feed?

  • Remember there's that insane growth spurt at 6 weeks.  Once DS got through that, he started giving us 4-5 hour stretches at night.  I EP'd with #1 and it sucked- I feel your pain!  Make sure he's getting enough hind milk so he stays fuller longer.  If he's got reflux issues, try propping up his crib/mattress (if you haven't already).

  • No advice, just commiserating. My DD was also doing longer stretches by now at 11-12 lbs, but my 13-lb DS is still doing 2 hrs, and a very rare 3-3.5 hr. I don't look forward to growth spurts, but maybe this is just one very long one... (from Day 2 and counting). I mind and I don't. This could be his natural way of handling reflux (small frequent meals) or he could have more of a psychological need (I have not used a pacifier)... or I'm just not as good as burping him or keeping him awake to eat more... I figure I'll ask my pedi for advice if this continues to DS' next appt.

My LO just goth through her 6wk spurt. The last three nights she's had a 5 hr stretch overnight. I hope this happens for you too,
Can't figure out the signature thing, so here's the short, short version.....first daughter born on November 10, 2013. She was conceived through the magic of IVF after 2+ years of TTC.
  • If I am pumping how do I ensure he gets enough hind milk?

  • What's your before bed routine? We've found it helps our little guy (almost 6 weeks old) if we cluster feed him for two or three hours prior to bedtime. For example, we'll feed at 6:30, 8, and again at 9:30 if we want him to go down at 10. Sometimes even shorter intervals, like every hour. This will usually get him to sleep at least 4 hours, sometimes 5 or 6.

  • Does he eat every 2 hours around the clock? Or is he getting a longer stretch during the day? If so, maybe try waking him up or getting a dream feed in during the day?

We feed every 2 hours during the day and then top him off before bed. He usually drinks 2.5 oz per bottle.

Usually we do every two hours but since we don't always go to bed at the same time we often end up giving him an extra bottle before bed. Often it is 8, 10 and then again at 11. We have not tried every hour yet....

  • Mines 6-7 weeks old. I feed her every 3 hours during the day (wake her to feed) and her last feeding is at 11-12 and then I wake her at 5 (trying to get on a schedule for work)

  • I'm starting to try and get LO to sleep on a schedule. I have to go back to work in a month. I'm really hoping he'll sleep longer so I'll have the energy to work.  Right now I'm trying to get him to eat every 4hrs instead of 2-3. I give him the pacifier until its time if he gets awaken when he goes #1. I pump to bottle feed which seems to helps with stretching the time too as well as keeping an eye on how much his eating. Lo is up to 4oz a feeding... So far his getting the idea.  :|
