update: annoyed with my OB (vent)

Just need to vent. My OB left his old practice a few months ago and went to a much smaller one. The new protocol is to call his cell if you have a concern, whereas at the big practice you'd talk to the on-call person. I was out shopping today for about an hour and not only did my legs get swollen despite the fact I was wearing my compression stockings, but my hands got really puffy as well. Swelling has been an issue that the OB has been keeping an eye on, so I went home and called right away.  This was around 4 maybe? He never called me back! I sat with my legs up for the rest of the night and everything seems ok now -- my BP was also normal and dropped even lower after I'd been home a little. Obviously if I had been really concerned (i.e. if my BP had been high) I would have gone straight to the hospital, but WTF?

  • That's so annoying!! Does he work with a nurse or secretary that can help reach him next time? Maybe he is traveling but still he needs a back up.

I would bring this up in my next appointment and let him know it's disappointing and agree on what needs to happen the next time you don't hear back from him in a couple hours or so.

  • I agree with @Hg45! I'd follow up with him.

Also, next time I'd call L&D.

  • That's crazy.  What if you had been in labor and really needed him?  You should definitely mention this next visit.

  • Dude, what is it with flaky doctors? I'd be sure to being it up with him so that you know how to handle things in the event of an emergency. Our pedi is a solo doc practice and we call her cell phone if we need anything after hours. If for some odd reason she can't be reached by her cell then she changes her voicemail message with instructions. Maybe that's a suggestion for him?
  • I agree with @Hg45 as well! Ugh, I'd be super annoyed too!!
  • UPDATE: I didn't hear from my OB Monday morning (I'd called Sunday afternoon), so I left him another message around 1pm yesterday and still nothing. So I called the office this morning to ask if he was out of the office, sick, etc., and they were like "no, he's here," so I left him *another* message, this time at the office. He finally called me around 4:30 and gives me test results from like a month ago -- what?  Umm, I already know I passed my 3 hour GTT.  I'm like "I called because my swelling was really bad Sunday and worse than usual on Monday," and he's like "oh, I really wish I could have seen you today." WHAT?  I told him, "yeah, that's why I called you Sunday AND Monday!" He said he didn't get my calls or that maybe I was speaking too fast and he didn't understand my messages??  I asked if he had messages he didn't understand and he said no. What?  This makes no sense. But then he said next time to make sure I speak slowly. WTF is he talking about? The whole thing left me confused and annoyed.

  • Any other circumstance u would say drop him but I don't even know if that's feasible at this point. So sorry but that's very irresponsible of him. Is he at least going to see you tomorrow or had a sufgestion on what you should do?
  • I'd be switching OBs like stat. That's ridiculous.

  • At least he didn't say to Text him next time?

  • Yeah, it's a tough call. I think at this point it's too late to change and I've generally been happy with him otherwise. My husband LOVES him, whereas I like him a fair amount, but have always felt he's a little out there/flaky...so this sort of proves my point!

He didn't really give me any advice, but he said he'd call when he gets some test results and I have an appt scheduled on Monday anyway, so I'll talk to him more about it then.

Scromlette  Actually, maybe that's a good idea!  Any time I leave him a VM, I should follow it up with a text with my name, DOB, and EDD, so he has no excuse to be dumb.

  • I would make sure to ask him what the protocol is if you go into labor and he can't be reached?!
