Cloth Diapering

Planet Wise Question

I'm due to receive my very first fluff mail in just a couple days! I still don't have a way to store the dirty diapers, however. Would you recommend the Planet Wise Diaper Pail liner with just a regular plastic trash can or a Planet Wise Wet Bag? I'm looking for the best way to mask the smell considering baby shares her room, and therefore diapering station, with me.

  • Right now DS and I are sleeping in the guest room at my brother's place and the diaper pail is less than 10 feet from the bed. It is a step can with locking lid. I prefer this because DS is at that age where he gets into everything. It still gets plenty of air and it does not smell. Have heard good things about PW pail liners and wet bags.

This. One is a step can that I took the lid off of, the other is a laundry hamper with holes on the sides.
and how is the smell? do you use any scent clip type things?

  • The more oxygen that can get to your diapers, the less they will smell. I find that on laundry day, it's always the diapers at the bottom of the pail that smell because I think the ammonia forms in the absence of oxygen.

Honestly, you don't need to do anything to mask the smell because you probably won't smell anything. If you smell something then something is probably wrong with your wash routine and you might even notice other problems.

But as it happens the pail liners I use are Kissaluvs and they have a fabric tag inside - do the Planet Wise have these? - and I put one drop each of Tea Trea, Lavender and Eucalyptus essential oils on it. When we are traveling, like now, I don't bother with this step because I don't want to carry the oils. And truthfully I don't notice any diaper smell. I just happen to like the smell of the essential oils. So, it's a nice-to-have but it's hardly essential.
  • I also have the pail longer with a regular trash can with swing lid.

Ditto on having two pail liners, and two wet bags for the diaper bag if you plan to cd while you're out.

  • I actually like using the hanging wet bag. We have the zippered PW one, and I just leave the zipper open for air circulation. We had a small pail, but it was the perfect height for DS to get into. If I tried a pail again, I'd go for a taller trash can.

  • Hmm, I just use a mop bucket for my diaper pail without any liner since I am usually just washing 12-18 BB inserts/prefolds and a cover or two EOD.  I haven't had any issues with smell with this set up - except for when I tried a different detergent that didn't get the dipes clean to begin with.

We did this when we first started out, during our diaper trial when I hadn't yet picked up any wetbags or pail liners. Worked fine. But at that stage I wasn't worried about keeping DS out of the diaper pail.
  • I have a Planet Wise pail liner in a regular (open) trash can in the laundry room.  And a hanging Planet Wise bag in the nursery.  I empty the hanging bag every night into the laundry room pail.  I don't have anything for the diaper bag b/c I just put the clean ones right in the diaper bag and put the dirties in a plastic bag until I get home and put them with the rest of the dirties.  When we go away for the weekend I take the hanging bag.  I am a fan of Planet Wise b/c I have not experienced any leaking or wicking.
  • Planet Wise pail liner with a Dekor diaper pail. Once I used up all the plastic liners that came with the diaper pail I switch to the pail liner.  It works VERY well.

Ditto, but right now I have the lid off.  I also have wetbags at my station downstairs, and I find it more convenient to dump the diaper into a pail than a floppy wet bag.  I'd say it saves time and is more efficient, but it's just easier because I'm lazy.
  • I use a kangacare hanging wet bag on the doorknob and like that it doesn't take up much space. We don't have odors washing every third day.

  • Trash can and pail liner. Super easy!

  • Our pail does start to stink, but it is his overnight diapers which are really strong with ammonia and poop diapers that don't need to be sprayed. I wash every other day, so it's not too bad. If it's super stinky I will wash them early. A covered pail would be worse, in my opinion.

Are you soaking the ON diapers yet? It will help with the stink and the eventual ammonia build-up.

  • I don't soak them yet. I should, but Im lazy, honestly. Right now I usually use a prefold stuffed into a 4.0 so it's hard to ruin those. I'm going to make a diaper sprayer for his poo though. Dunk and swish blows.
