Acid reflux and formula

Just wanted to check with you other moms who have babies with acid reflux, what formula are you using? We r currently on alimentum and I am wondering if he really needs to be on it because he does not have a diagnosed milk allergy, and it is so expensive. We are in the process of changing pediatricians because our current one is horrible and has not given us any guidance or else I would ask the doctor. We have tried the similac regular and sensitive and wondering if I should try going back to one of those or a different one, he is very gassy and fussy. He is now on meds for the reflux.

Re: Acid reflux and formula

  • Our daughter's spit up was still pretty bad, even with the Zantac (which is normal) so we decided to mix 3 oz of Similac advanced with 2 oz of Similac spit up.  This has worked out really well for us.  We have no constipation issues with the spit up since we cut it, but seem to get some benefit with it helping keep everything down.  She still has some days where she spits up, but nowhere near as much.  She is now what I would call a happy spitter.  Btw this and the Zantac there is no more fussing and crying. FYI- we only use the ready to feed.

  • My LO is also on alimentum but he has a milk and corn allergy. So I definitely understand the cost! 10 bucks a bottle!!! Since your LO has no diagnosed allergies I would transition to a formula for spit up or one that's easily digested like gentle ease as those help with reflux too!
  • My LO is on alimentum as well, she has acid reflux and it's the best formula for her (and we tried a bunch, including BM).

Check with your insurance and see if it's covered. We went through a company called apria, they took care of calling our insurance - we just had to get a note from our pediatrician. Our pediatrician was happy to write it for us even though he did not recommend the formula. ...also a side note, when I originally called our insurance they said they wouldn't cover it - but once this company called they did.
  • DS 1 had acid reflux and the emfamil AR worked great for him. DS2 also has acid reflux and is lactose intolerant so he is on Soy formula. Try the acid reflux formulas, they are made to be thicker which is better for acid reflux.

  • While I don't have this problem with DS2, I did with DS1. He actually did best on the Target brand of similac sensitive. He did better on that than the name brand.
