Sexist party favors?

Is it sexist to do different party favor bags for boys and girls? My son is really into rescue bots but I don't think the girls will like that stuff so much so I was thinking disney princess stuff for their bags. Is that crazy or okay?

  • I don't like it. My daughters don't like princesses and would a million times rather play with rescue bots, so I'm annoyed when they are handed a "girl" favor bag. We take it, but they don't play with the stuff and we end up tossing it shortly thereafter since it's getting no use.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • If you're having a theme party, just stick with the theme. My daughter would play with robots or princesses equally.
  • Yes it is sexist

    I agree.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I think I may get enough favor bags of the transformers for everyone and some "girl bags " too and they can choose. I think it's more that the only transformers stuff I can find is more on the older side. They don't have much if the rescue bots stuff which is more toddler appropriate. The transformers seems more "boyish" than the rescue bots especially since there is one girl charachter and they don't make her toy.
    Thanks for the feedback.

Just do the transformers. My kid would tell you to your face it's not fair and then I would have to get her in trouble for being rude and then she'd tell me you were rude for giving her girl things when she wanted boy things. How do I know? Lived through this exact scenario last fall.

I think I love your kid.
  • I think it's okay to offer alternatives as choices, but make sure you have enough of each.  Then the boys AND the girls can choose which type of bag they'd want.  Otherwise just keep them all the same.

We went to a bday party with "boy" favors and "girl" favors.  DS1 wanted the boy one, but DS2 wanted the tiara girl favor bag :)

  • I would have both and let ALL the children choose. Some girls may want the transformers and some boys may want the princess stuff, to assume that transformers are "for boys" and princesses are "for girls" reinforces negative gender stereotypes.

  • Coming from a big family with so many cousins.. I would highly suggest that you just pick one theme and make sure there is enough for everyone.  It is easier that way because kids will pick up on the differences or complain it's not fair or forget which bag they chose...  One party favor bag is the way to go! Have fun with party planning!
