Anyone have a creative New Years Resolution to share?

I'm trying to settle on one... so far these are ones I've thought of...

1.  No technology Tuesday (no tv, video games, iphone/ipad, etc)  Basically, no technology distractions (phone calls are ok) every Tuesday.  This is kinda becoming an issue in our house for the kids and for US so we need to try to nip it in the bud.

2.  Game night (may do this with #1?).  DS is just now really getting into board games (like he wants to play them all.the.time).  This might be a good way to encourage the family interaction but limit it for my own sanity as well ;-)

3.  A picture of the kids (all together) everyday for a year.  This one I'm stealing from a friend on FB but I don't know if I can pull it off.

Obviously, mine are all kind of family related but feel free to share any others?  DH and I like to brainstorm on NYE but I'm coming up short on ideas this year.  Mostly b/c I know with a newborn that I will be in survival mode and don't want to over-extend myself!

Re: Anyone have a creative New Years Resolution to share?

  • Honestly, I'm not doing resolutions this year. I feel like with a newborn and a two-year-old I'd be setting myself up for failure. I did just join a gym a couple months ago and signed up for a personal trainer, so I fully plan on taking advantage of that.

A friend of mine had the idea to pick a word for the year. It's a cool thougt because the word can be really all encompassing and it's easy to remember...kind of like a mantra.

I decided my word for the year is going to be love. I need to try to remember to react more from a loving place than an angry place at the moment and I'm sure the love focus wills gift as baby enters our lives.

I love this. I might steal it. It might help my anxiety about other people, but mostly I think it will make me a happier, kinder person.

  • I am resolving to not try to control everything. Reading all the baby books basically lead me to one conclusion: you can't plan for everything. I usually plan for everything (I have a weekly meal schedule, a workout schedule, a calendar for school, a checklist for weekly to-dos, etc...), but I think I need to let go of some of this so I can stay sane through this year.

    I love this idea! :)

  • Not really a resolution, but I'm planning on running a 10 mile race in October with my sister.  I guess I'm resolving to get myself back in running shape before then.
  • Not really creative, but I want to stick to my Dave Ramsey budget every month this year.  We managed to do it about half the year for 2013 and we were so much happier/relaxed when we were on it than when we went around willy nilly about money.

Love this!! I am just getting into Dave Ramsey's books and plans and I have a similar resolution. I'm so excited and nervous to get strict. But I know it will feel so good. I'm glad you have done it and felt so good about it.

This is a GREAT idea, but oh my gosh, I don't think I could do it... lol... though at the end of the year, I'd be so happy that I did! :)

For us, we are trying to plan our wedding (I call him my husband - we have been best friends since we were teenagers and have been together several years  but have yet to get married!) so we need to save. We are pretty much going to save every penny during January and spend as little as possible.  It's really only a month-long resolution, more a short-term one, just to see how we do and how easy/hard it is. That's the only real resolution I can think of that would be deemed out of the box. Everything else I have planned (get more organized, shed the baby weight, etc) is all normal, boring stuff. :P
  • My new years resolution last year was to wear my hair down more often. I like resolutions that aren't difficult to keep.

This year, I'm with @ziggy903 and @bookshelves - have a baby and not fuck up parenthood. I may also add "be nice to my husband," cause I've been slightly difficult to handle these days. ;-)

  • @codypup you've got all year to work on that though! ;)

  • I haven't really given much thought to a resolution this year. I just want to get through the next 6 weeks at work, then figure out how to be a mom of two. Oh, and go back to the gym (or maybe get a shiny new jogging stroller instead). I really miss working out so I'm looking forward to being able to move and get back in shape.

A friend of mine took a picture every day for a year, and posted it on FB. He's extremely happy that today is the last day, and said how much he started hating it. I agree with a pp that once a week sounds more manageable.

  • Obviously to lose baby weight and get back in shape.
My big ones are to be right where I'm at without trying to change it or wish things were different. My other one is to be mindful to make sure I am intentionally thankful for at least one thing each day. I'm hoping that gratitude will grow and come right back to me.
  • Mine is cheesy but I mean it sincerely...to try to be the best person I can be. I feel like I F this one up all too often.
  • I'm going to work really hard on "respond, don't react." It's one of my social worker bff's catch phrases whenever she's asked for relationship advice, and it works so well for us.

I think I'm decent at it relationship wise, but there's no reason not to work on it in every area of my life. Line ups are long at the grocery store? Respond, don't react. Mom says something horrid because she does that sometimes? Respond, don't react. DH is sleeping through yet another night time feeding and I'm ready to drop the diaper genie on his head? Respond, don't react.
This is so perfect and I think I will steal. I've always been an emotional reactor and this would be a perfect way for me to work on that. Thanks, Tlex!!
