Hospital Doors

Got to thinking after the push present thread of another tradition around here in the deep South... wreaths on hospital doors. Or any other kind of decoration announcing "It's a..." or the baby's name or whatever. The hospitals even have hooks on the doors here just for them. Do they do that where you live? Would you like it?

I was kind of new to town and no girlfriends so DH went to the gift shop when he saw the other doors and got a little blue teddy bear with a dry erase board on it where we wrote DS's name and birthdate on it and we hung it on the door. It was thoughtful.

Re: Hospital Doors

  • I think that's sweet. It's definitely not a custom around here (CA) but people do deliver sex-based balloons, flowers, etc. I like hearing about cultural customs regarding birth :)

Never saw that in Michigan. In the Netherlands you hang a sign saying Boy or Girl in the front window. Some people buy plastic stork and hang it out with a baby doll dresses in the sex of the baby in their front yard. Also we have special blue and pink sugar balls you put on this dry cracker to serve to guest.

  • Not a custom around Mass either.

  • I've heard of it but we don't do it here though I think it's a lovely idea.
  • Not in the Greater Philadelphia Area.

    Where are you located?

  • I'm in Atlanta and I remember people having things on their doors at the hospital last time.  We didn't do it (what's the point, we're only there a couple of days).  I think the hospital may put something up for each patient, too, just a stork with either blue or pink depending on the gender maybe?  My door was shut unless someone was coming in or out, so it's not like I got to enjoy it.  I preferred the flowers and balloons that were delivered and kept in the room with me.
  • We do it here in North Alabama. I was put on bed rest at 33weeks so I actually made my own while sitting in a bed all day. I was able to hang it up in the nursery once we got home. It was nice to have something to do and it helped people recognize the door when coming to visit at the hospital. Just about every door has them at the hospitals here.

  • There wasn't anything like that at the hospital when I had DS. I've seen some people's front porches decorated with streamers and balloons, but I don't think that's the norm. Ours wasn't.

  • not here in CT. Though I would consider popping balloons on the mail box to announce boy or girl, only because we are friends with our neighbors and they'd care. Otherwise, one for the baby door is cute;)

I'm more of a fan of knitting, so I'd probably be likely to knit something- though I'm not sure how a warm a july baby is going to want to be!! I guess knitting a wreath would be a good compromise and certainly faster!

  • I think it's a cute idea! Never saw it but if the hospitals allow flowers I don't see how that's any different!!

  • Not seen it in Chicago.

Many people don't even use the storks or anything. In my opinion it says, "come kidnap my newborn." But I'm weird like that.

  • That's so cute! Definitely doesn't happen here in Pittsburgh. I've never visited anyone in the hospital with a newborn so I don't even know the protocol! Honestly I think I'll send my bff flowers once she's home though. I hate lugging stuff around.

You and I think alike. I would never announce to the open public we have a brand new baby in the house (and we live in a safe area).

Neighbors that are close to us will know. Family will know. People that are supposed to know, will know.

  • I've never heard of that.

People send out birth announcements to people they know here, but that's about it. No signs in the yard or announcements in the paper.

  • I'm in SC and yes, I've seen little things on the door of the suites at the hospital.  I'm pretty sure it's generic.  Of course family and friends do flowers and balloons for in the room.

I have also see balloons on mailboxes in pink or blue (which people around here use as marker for a baby shower too:  "It's the driveway with the pink/blue balloons on the mailbox!"  I've SEEN the storks in the yards, but like PPs, I don't much care for notion of letting everyone driving by know there is a newborn in the house.  : /

Actually, the nurses that release you from the hospital here warn you against putting anything on your home for that exact reason.

You must be friends with my MIL.  She feels the same way.

  • It's a big deal around here ( NC).
My bestie made this sign for the door when DS was born and it now hangs in his room. She is waiting with baited breath to make one for this baby. She is my crafty friend!

I am also from North Alabama. It's nice to see Alabama ladies on here. :-)

My mother made a wreath for my hospital door. I thought it was cute. I don't know that I will go through the trouble to do this myself but I thought it was a nice gesture on her part.

  • I am also in the deep south. My SIL made us a beautiful wreath that matches DS's room. It hung on the hospital door until we went home, and now it is in his room. I've also seen some gorgeous banners made out of burlap. It sounds tacky, but they are really cute in person.

  • In the hospital that I'll be delivering at, there's windows with a ledge in every room, right by the door. Most people put something there to signify it's a boy/girl (balloons, flowers, teddy bears, etc)

  • Our neighbors across the street had a sign... I remember because I was like, "oh look!!  If I get KU soon, baby can have a playmate!!"

I doubt I would have done it if I wouldn't have been on bed rest. I definitely think they are cute though. My mother had actually planned to make one, but I begged her to let me do it instead since I was so bored!

We didn't have anything outside of our house to say "come kidnap our newborn" as pp's have said. This just stayed on the hospital door and then in DS's room.
