My LO is sick..any ideas?

Our 9 month old got a cold from a baby that was sick in the nursery. She had a low fever off and on for about 3 days. Today, day 4, she hasn't had a fever since yesterday morning. She still has a cough and slightly runny nose -that may be from teething though- but her mucus is clear. Yesterday, I noticed small red splotches showing up on her back and the back of her head/neck. Today, the splotchiness has spread to her face and stomach. She doesn't act like it's itching or bothersome in any way. Like I said, she no longer has a fever. The "rash" isn't bumpy but just appears on the skin as tiny red splotches.

She doesn't have any allergies that we are aware of. She has been acting and eating normally and has no signs of an infection.

Any idea what this could be? Everything to me seems to point to it being a virus.

DS gets a rash the day after a fever sometimes and its just a virus. I would say its the virus working the way out of her system. You can have her seen by the pedi just in case but I would imagine its nothing to be too concernerd about. Like DC said....roseola and fifths both present VERY high fevers.

  • Yeah I've researched measels, roseola, and fifths..measels seem to match her symptoms the best, but the rash she has isn't raised at all.

Either way, if it is measels, it says there is nothing to do for it but to let it run its course and treat the symptoms if you wish.  Should last 1 to 2 weeks.

She hasn't shown any alarming signs to make me think she needs to be seen by the doc so I'm gonna wait on that and continue to monitor her.  I'm not gonna spend the money to run in there and be told oh it's a virus, just let it do it's thing lol.
  • Well she hasn't had the MMR because it was scheduled while she still had a huge..i mean huge, hard, not normal..knot on her leg from the previous round of shots (months earlier) so I declined it and postponed for when the knot was gone and she has gotten older with more body weight.  So it could be measles, but like I said earlier, the rash isn't appearing to be the same as what I've read being described for the measles.
  • My MIL thinks we are crazy for not running to the doc for every little fever.  Glad to have a response from someone like minded haha.
  • MMR shot isn't until 1 year old.

Either way I think it sounds viral. The only reason to be concerned is if you or someone your LO spends lots of time with is pregnant. Fifths and measles can be issues more for pregnant women than for the actual child.

I'll try to find our pic of roseola because DD already had it, but she didn't have any cold symptoms with it.

  • Probably just a virus.  If her fever is low and she doesn't seem to be itchy, I wouldn't worry about it.  It's the first of many.  Most kids get a million viral rashes.

  • Last week my little guy had a fever that only lasted one day. A couple days later he had a rash on his face, stomach and back which seemed to lessen then increase randomly. After two days the rash was gone. No fever. Probably just some random virus. Honestly we didn't even call the pediatrician because he wasn't bothered by it and it went away so quickly!

  • Unless her fever persists or she seems uncomfortable, I wouldn't call. DD1 had fever for 2 days followed by a torso/neck rash for 2 days sometime last year. I freaked out a little, but after looking into it, it seems to be a pretty common course for several viruses.
As to what exactly it is, unless you're pregnant (in which case, as others have said, Fifths could be an issue), it doesn't really matter. Even if it is measles and she would thus be immune to it, if you're planning on the MMR I don't think they even make mumps and rubella as a separate shot, so she'll get vaccinated against it anyway.

  • Sorry for the late response..we just got back in town from holiday traveling.

Anyway..I took her in even though she hadn't had a fever for about 48 hours because she was fussing so much at night and NOTHING calmed her down.  Doc confirmed the measles, but said what was bothering her was an ear infection!

Ugh, I had no idea her ears were bothering her.  I even cleaned her ears out just to see if she seemed agitated when I touched them, but she didn't even flinch.  He checked them and said the right one on a scale of 1-10 was an 8 for how bad of an infection she had.  I can't believe she didn't even tug on it or run fever with such a bad infection.  If I hadn't taken her in, I wouldn't have known.

Thankfully we got it all worked out and she's back to normal again.
