NBR Silver Lakes/Echo Park CA

Does anyone live in or near the Silver Lakes/Echo Park area in Cali?  H mentioned an interest in moving out west the other day. I never thought he'd want to leave NYC but I guess a baby changed that. The idea of good schools and having a yard are tempting. Plus the warm weather. We're in Brooklyn now. Tried to pull the Jersey card and he refuses to go back to my home state.

I have only ever been to Sacramento, San Diego, and Newport Beach. I like San Diego but i'm told its super republican?

My list of needs/wants are;

Super veg friendly
Liberal
A decent gay community and a mixture of cultures (I want LO to experience that as the norm)

Basically I want my hood but I want to be able to afford a house with a yard. Suggestions?

Re: NBR Silver Lakes/Echo Park CA

  • I lived in Barstow CA when DH was in the marines. I have not heard of echo park but there was a small community called silver lakes about 15 min from Barstow (pop 23,000). If that's the one your talking about, I vote no. The community was really nice but really small and in the middle of the desert. Never been to NY but it would be total culture shock!! Loved San Diego and also San Francisco was really nice. I live in Indiana and love it here. I would like living in CA but not in the middle of the damn desert again!!

  • Have you considered Portland, OR? Fits your criteria!

  • @carriet2018  The only way i'm leaving NYC is for NJ or a place that is warm. Oh and my sis has to move with us.

@emilyraymond from what i understand it is a suburb of Los Angeles. H lived in San fran for a year and hated it cause it isnt that warm. I heard Berkley is nice and right outside San Fran but I don't think he would go for it.

Oh, yeah I guess so...it is pretty rainy. But I do think you would like it. It's worth a visit if you're ever in that area!

DH and I went there to check it out for a possible move.
    LOVED the city.
@tmccord21 you feel like you could eat off the sidewalk there. It's SO clean compared to NYC. (Which is totes still my fave)
But the fact that you rarely see sun... changed our minds.

  • I don't know if the SF Bay Area really fits your criteria because it's so damn expensive, but there are plenty of liberals, vegs, gays....all the best kind of people, really (although I'm not veg, but a locavore, i.e. crunchy eater).

I think you would love Berkeley, but the weather is kind of meh. Maybe Santa Cruz? :)

I'm in the South Bay and the weather is great (it was t-shirt weather last week), hot in the summer but not humid, we have a decent sized yard, we're an hour from "the city" (SF). Housing and property taxes are steep, but then again you're in NY so it might be commensurate.

  • it's hipster-city, and would fit the rest of your criteria, but housing is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.  i watch house hunters! lol

personally, i would never ever want to live in LA, esp vs. NYC.  If forced,  I would do northern california only!

  • I do! It's an awesome area very hipster. You could consider west Hollywood also or Venice.
  • Oh in terms of affordability - silver lake/ echo park is a little more affordable and some of the surrounding areas are up and coming. I love living in LA!
  • Im from BK and now I love Providence, I do totes miss my corner fruit stand guy in Bay Ridge but now I get to live in a city while owning a sweet house.  Im probably going to wind up with a kid in private school.  But thats how it was for me in Brooklyn too.

  • I lived in downtown LA for years up until this past August (just outside of Silverlake/Echo Park), and my father has lived in Silverlake for about 16 years. It has what you're looking for, but it's very very expensive. Your best bet is Echo Park in terms of bang for your buck, but there are still some areas there that are downright dangerous. My friends and I nearly got mugged there outside of my friend's house party a few years ago. Echo Park isn't all bad though. It's pretty charming. If you can afford Silverlake I would go that route. The reservoir is perfect for family outings, and there's a CSA called Silverlake Farms. I used to buy in before we moved. Beware that traffic blows when there's a Dodger game.

  • I live in San Diego and it is awesome! Weather is great year round, gay communities, lots of health-conscious people/restaurants/grocery. I would say liberal social-wise if not political-wise... Not sure which you mean? Cost of living is high but there are areas you can get cheaper and you're coming from NYC so it's not like you're not used to it. I'm originally from Seattle which is what you described except for the weather...
  • Definitely suggesting Santa Cruz, love it there. I used to live in Scott's Valley, not far from SC. The board walk is great for kids and the weather is pretty nice.

    I luuuuurve Santa Cruz

  • What about Austin? Yes it's in the middle of texas but it's an awesome city fitting all your criteria!
