Best carrier for back carrying/hiking?

Yet another carrier post! I need a carrier to carry LO on my back for hiking/walking/snowshoeing.  I checked out videos on using the Ergo for back-carrying (since I already have one), but I feel like it positions her really low on my back and I can't make the adjustments work.  Any favorites for back-carrying?

As an aside, I was back-carrying her around the house for practice and I could NOT keep her from picking at the mole that is in the middle of my back.  Gross, and ouch!

  • We have a Kelty kids one and dh prefers that. I like the ergo for hikes.

  • We use a Kelty, Ergo, or Babyhawk for backcarrying/hiking.  They each have their pros and cons.

The Kelty is great because it has a sunshade, and an attached backpack for carrying hiking things like lunch/snack/water.  But it does get a little uncomfortable (for both the wearer and the child - we think my son's legs fall asleep in it, because when we take him out he freaks out a bit saying his legs hurt).

The Ergo is great because it's more comfortable for the wearer and child and can still carry something like a tube of sunscreen and/or a small snack (we used it last week and I fit a little bag of dried cranberries and an applesauce).  But there's no external sun protection, and it does keep them down a bit lower.

The Babyhawk is great because it's easy to do a high back carry, and is comfortable for wearer and child.   But there's no storage or external sun protection.  We tend to use this for short hikes where we think he's going to be alternating between walking and being worn.

  • Love our Osprey carrier. They only came out about 3 years ago, so they may be a little more difficult to find used; but I am pretty sure REI has them.

They are highly adjustable and carry more like a backpack (ie., weight on your hips), so it is comfortable for the grown-ups. They're also great for kiddo - lots of room for LO to see over your head, a sunshade, drool pad, foot straps (which didn't make sense right away, but came in super-handy a little later). At 1 year old, our DS would crawl into the carrier in the living room and 'ask' for a hike.

FYI, if you're short, all of the carriers that the kid sees over your head will feel a little top heavy. I've tried 'em all.

  • I like using the Ergo for back-carrying. Although it tends to push my pants down, which is annoying. I've never tried anything else though. I'm sure others will have good ideas!
  • If you want a higher back carry you probably want a mei tai or a woven wrap. The Babyhawk is great for smaller babies but is probably a bit small bodied for you at this point...the Kozy would be a good easy to find fit. You might also like the action baby carrier...would probably want the toddler size...as it can be worn higher on your waist. The kanga is another buckle carrier that might work but they are harder to find.
  • Thanks for all the awesome info!  I think we may keep our eyes out for a used Osprey as they become available, and in the meantime I may look into a mei tai.
