Parenting after a Loss

Reducing bottles/nursing and snacks?

At this point, A is getting a bottle (4oz) or nursing 5-6 times per day plus 3 "meals" (breakfast and dinner are 1/2 fruit veggie pouch combined with finger foods/table foods and lunch is a full pouch plus 2.5 oz of yogurt). At his recent pediatrician appointment, she talked about cutting back the bottles (from 4 4oz bottles to 3 5 oz bottles then to 2 6oz bottles) but I'm not sure exactly how to do that?  Also, she mentioned snacks.  When do you introduce snacks?  Hwo do you handle with daycare?  Also, when did you start introducing wcm into bottles?  Did you mix with BM?  Gradually build up amount in bottles as you approached a year?  Also, A has not really taken to sippy cups yet- like, at all.  And the idea that he is supposed to give up bottles in 2 months kind of freaks me out.  Advice? Experiences?

I should add, A is still a peanut at 27.5 inches and just 16lbs at 10 months.

Re: Reducing bottles/nursing and snacks?

  • First, I would highly question your pedi's advice... most nutrition is supposed to come from BM or formula until babies are 1 year old, not 10 months, and the intake of BM shouldn't really decrease before baby decreases it on their own - usually sometime around 10-14 months.  I wouldn't cut back bottles at all unless baby stops finishing them, and I def. wouldn't increase bottle size to 6 ounces- there is no need for a BF baby to ever take that much milk at once.

Theresa is right.  BM works different from formula.  It's the FF babies that need bigger bottles, but your BM should adjust with baby's age.

We're FF now, and I make four 6 oz bottles for the day, and if she wants more, I give her more.  If she wants less, I adjust with more food.  I'm really kind of leaving it up to her.  There are some days that she'll have breakfast, snack, and lunch before I even realize she hasn't had a bottle.  I'll offer it, and she'll definitely let me know if she doesn't want it.

As for sippys, I add a tiny bit of the Gerber juice to her water.  It flavors it enough that it makes her interested in drinking more, but it's not full of tons of sugary juice.  The was fantastic when we visited my MIL and the dry climate there.  I'll start this week putting some formula in her sippy to have with breakfast to see if she'll drink that out of her sippy cup too.

  • DS just turned 1 and we are do sippy cup of whole milk in the morning, then breakfast, then lunch with water, sippy of milk in afternoon and snack, water and dinner, formula in bottle before bed. Hoping to drop the formula and replace with milk eventually but for now it works.

If you want to cut back from 4 bottles to 3 bottles that are larger, that might be ok with spacing them to longer between feedings - 15 ounces is how much my DD took from 5.5mo-11mo.

I wouldn't introduce WCM until LO is a year old.

My LO dropped one of her bottles on her own around 11 months - she just stopped wanting it, in favor of eating more solid foods.  At 1 year, she was taking 10 ounces of breastmilk at daycare. Over the course of a month, we transitioned from BM to WCM (mixing it until my freezer stash was gone) and then once it was all WCM, transitioned from the bottle to a sippy cup (I didn't want to waste BM and she didn't like milk of any kind in a sippy at first).

Have you tried the straw sippy cups?

As for daycare and snacks, I'd talk to daycare about their policies.  We usually send fruit  or yogurt as a snack.

I don't think that slowly reducing bottles by an ounce or two would mean that he still wouldn't be getting the majority of his nutrition from breast milk as he approaches the one year mark. I just want to figure out the best way to make a gradual transition to food based nutrition, rather than an abrupt one at around 12-13 months.

We have tried straw sippy cups of water, and he's either uninterested or he'll open his mouth for us to squeeze some water in, but seems to either not want to - or not know to- suck on the straw.

I'm so glad you asked this question.  DS is also at 16 lbs at 9.5 months, and our pedi keeps telling us to up his bottles.  But we can't get him to take more BM.  He dropped a bottle about a month ago and is now only eating 2-five oz bottles at DC and nursing before I go to work and a few times in the evening.  We only give him solids once a day, but he loves his Cheerios and puffs.  We set him up in his high chair and he snacks away while we fix dinner or chores around the house.

We also had problems with a sippy cup, but he got used to the NUK with a soft nipple.  Now he'll take any sippy cup.

A hasn't shown signs that he's ready to drop a bottle, but on the weekends when he nurses, we're down to five sessions versus the six milks (bottle or nurse) that he gets during the week and that was kind of his decision because he wasn't interested in the late afternoon nursing session anymore (around 4pm), so I combined the 2:30 and 4pm nursing session into a 3:30 single session.

I will get look into trying the NUK cup.  DH is ready to just go to the store and buy a bunch of different kinds and see what takes.

We just dropped from 4 to 3 bottles. Day at about 11m bc they kinda did it on their own. Right now I'm at 75% WCM and 25% formula (they're 2w away from a year old). Also my girls still can't do a sippy but use a straw like a champ. Maybe try that?
Whoa.  What do you mean they're 2 weeks away from a year old?  WTH?! :)
