My cat thinks he's a doula

You may know by now that I love my cats. I have two and they're my babies-- they'll always be my first babies. My orange tabby is a total mama's boy and always has been a sweet, affectionate goofball. Pregnancy has brought him to a whole new level, though!

He's not just "cuddly," he's velcroed to me. Since early in first tri when I would sleep from the time I got home from work, he would snuggle in behind my knees and purr while I slept. The few times I vomited, he ran to the bathroom with me and sat beside the toilet until I was done.

Now that we're past all that, he sleeps in bed with us the whole night, and usually drapes himself over my belly to sleep. If LO kicks him, his ears twitch and he purrs. If I cough or start to wake up, kitty gets up to let me move. If I get out of bed, he trots to the bathroom ahead of me, directly to the toilet and sits there waiting for me to pee. He usually meows softly at me the whole time.

If I go to the kitchen for a snack, he follows, eats a bite of his food, then follows me back to bed. Once I'm in bed and settled, he jumps up and massages my arm or belly while purring until I fall asleep.

If he's ever sleeping on DH or at the foot of the bed and sees me stirring , he leaps over to me and starts head-bonking and purring like "shh, back to sleep."

He's always been lovey, but he's like a little nurse ever since I got knocked up!!

  • I love this. DH really wants to get a cat, and I think we will eventually (we can't have pets in our apartment).

  • Oh my goodness my cat has too!
Well i have three and the only boy has become super whiney.
The mom, has become my "cat doula" as well! She lays and cuddles, follows me around- i cannot have more than five seconds alone. Its hilarious and i love it!

  • That is so cute!  I have two cats that I absolutely adore but I haven't noticed many changes in them. They are as cute and cuddly as ever.

  • My big fat black cat has been all over me more lately too. He scratches at the door when I'm in the bathroom, sleeps at my feet now instead of my husbands and is just more cuddly. I keep wondering how he'll be with the new baby. We got him when DD was 10 months old and he was a few months old himself so he's grown up with her.

  • That is flat-out ADORABLE.

Our tuxedo cat is always affectionate and sleeps curled up either on MH's chest or nestled in with me.....but yours has taken cat affection ABOVE AND BEYOND.

    Love it.

  • This is just the sweetest thing about a kitty I've ever read.  I practically have tears in my eyes.  What a sweetie pie!

  • We have a ginger tabby too, Lena. She is DS's cat and very affectionate, but yes, ever since the very start of my pregnancy she will lie on my belly to sleep. Last night the baby kicked her for the first time.
She doesn't follow me around everywhere tho!
  • This made me cry. :( i just lost my kitty a month ago and he was the same way, always right by my side when i didn't feel well, so he was right there during all the morning sickness. I miss him so badly

  • Aww that is so sweet, he loves you! My dogs have taken to being chickens, as in, sitting on my bump whenever they get a chance. Here's to hoping we can teach them to change diapers, lol.

I'm so sorry, krafish. They really do become part of the family.

  • I missed my cats so much when we were traveling for Christmas! It usually takes them a few days to forgive us for leaving them, but one was snuggled on my lap within hours of us getting home yesterday and the other climbed on my thighs in bed this morning. My husband is jealous!
  • Cats are amazing creatures. I've always been a "cat person," and always had a cat - until this year when ours passed away about 12-15 weeks into being pregnant. That week we saw a cat in the neighborhood that we'd seen before, but that had always been skittish and not really come near. This time though, it came right up to me and got in my lap. It does this everytime I see it now. I love it. We don't know his/her name (no tags) so we just call her Magic Cat. He/she always nuzzles my belly before settling in.

We like to call them animal friends in our house - because they are so much more than pets.

  • @krafish and @benevolentforce I'm so sorry to hear that your kitties have passed. The very idea of that brings tears to my eyes. These are actually my first cats. I grew up with dogs and never had a cat until DH and I adopted my orange boy and then a little later we adopted our Siamese mix girl.

I had no idea I was a cat person until I had them in my life. They've brought us so much joy and a lot of laughter. They are definitely family to us.

  • Love all of this...
Except @krafish - so sorry about your kitty :(

We have two dogs and two cats, all who have become very clingy and protective of me. If my labs hear anything out of the ordinary, one sits next to me and barks while the other goes toward the sound. It's like a tag team affair...and makes my heart happy when they do it!
One of my cats, our first pet, will lay on my belly any chance she gets and instantly purrs.

    I love animals :)
  • We have 2 boys, litter mates, one is a moo cat white with black cow spots and the other is black. My moo cat started sleeping in the corner of my bed by my pillow shortly after I got pregnant, which he hasn't done in a long time. Also sticks to his normal routine of curl up on the couch wit me. My black cat has been the surprise. During the 2 tri he start head nudging my belly which he has never done before. He has always enjoyed laying on your hip, shoulder or legs when on your side but hasn 't done it in a long time. Now he is doing it all the time. He like to stretch he's legs over my belly. The are both my bed buddies if I am just hanging out on the bed with Netflix. I would really love to know what they are thinking about what is going on in our bellies.
