Sudden flu like symptoms/gone next day

I'm usually pretty low key and easy going about discomfort and being sick.  But I wanted to hear everyone's opinion on some symptoms I've been having.

Saturday mid day I got hit with sudden flu like symptoms (headache, nausea, chills, severe body ache/joint pains, lack of apetite, fever of 100) that progressed as the day went on.  I spoke with my OB Saturday evening and he said he had three other calls re: the flu and not to worry.  I woke up the next morning and didn't have the flu symptoms at all anymore just felt extreme fatigue/weakness and a loss of apetite.  My Braxton HIcks were much more frequent this whole weekend.  When laying down and "relaxing" they were 15 minute apart.  I am a little paranoid so I installed the baby's car seat base and washed the car seat cover, and packed an overnnight bag just in case.  All her stuff is ready to go except her mini crib (which I thought I could assemble closer to her due date).  Also I have been having "lightning crotch" which I never really had with DS.

All normal?  I have had a baby before but IDK I think I'm just being a worrier!  At what point should I say something to my OB etc.?  I have 4 more weeks of work so I today I'm going to finish all my work and clean my desk just in case.  I guess having everything ready eases my anxiety.

Re: Sudden flu like symptoms/gone next day

  • I just don't know if I am overreacting.  Maybe I will call the OB's office later today.  My DH keeps making me feel like I'm overreacting and I need to relax....  ugh.

  • you're asking us when you should call your OB? I'd say at the point where you thought you should pack an overnight bag. [-(

  • Well.....  I'm extremely type A.  I did call my OB and he said the flu is going around and not to worry about it.  Me packing my overnight bag, installing the car seat etc. is my coping mechanism when I'm feeling anxious.  I'm not sure if that makes a difference.  Thanks for your comment!

I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with similar symptoms b/c of course google said flu like symptoms can indicate impending labor (but google says everything can).

  • Thanks all!  I thought to myself should I post this?  I hope the usual suspects dont' start going off on me cause I ask for some suppport in a situation...  Proven right, you guys this is supposed to be a board  for support not belittling and making people feel stupid.  Get it together.

I've had a baby before so if I thought these were contractions like labor was starting I would go to the hospital.  These feel like strong braxton hicks that are more frequent and any pregnant lady might feel anxious about that.

I seriously don't know why a lof of you are so darn judgey and mean when people ask questions on here.  It makes no sense to me.  My orignal board Feb 2012 never had problems like this and I keep in touch with several of the girls from those boards and we all still support each other.  It's just a shame that this board doesn't foster a similar environment...

If you're packing an overnight bag, asking dr google, and asking us, why the fuck aren't you calling your doctor? Your doctor said not to stress about the flulike symptoms. She didn't say not to call if you started having contractions. Call your damn doctor. For fuck's sake.

K but have you ever been in pre-term labour? Because the signs and symptoms can be quite different than those of regular labour, including the contractions.
If you're wondering if you should call your doctor, you should call your doctor. It's pretty much that black and white.
And as for all the crap I bolded…..get out of town. This board is so supportive. You know exactly why you wondered if you should post this - because you knew we would say, yes, call your doctor. YOU get it together.

Have yall every wondered why you consistently get similar feedback about your tone and attitude?

Being pregnant can make people emotional and have anxiety.  Belittling them is way less effective than being supportive and saying, "hey I would just call your doctor vs. For fuck sake call your doctor you idiot!".  All I'm saying is I don't know why the usual suspects have to be so curt with a lot of the posters (except each other).

I could care less about the internet in the sense that I am not going to let anyone ruin my day.  I just find a need to finally say something since this has been going on for 30+ weeks.  I guess this just isnt the way that I handle myself and talk to other people whether I know them well or they are strangers.  Maybe it's my disposition but I lean towards being supportive yet factual vs. curt and belittling.  And I'm definitly raising my children to be thoughtful before they speak as well (just had to throw that in there b/c it baffles me that you guys have such bad attitudes).

  • I spent the other night in L & D as my BH were very similar . I had a dr visit and she sent me straight to hospital . Missy moo was monitored and so were my BH . I was given steriod shots and lots of fluid . I have had a baby before but I didn't have these symptoms . I would just call your Dr or go to L & D to be on the safe side . Wishing you all the best with your precious package :-)
  • 1. No one called you an idiot - it was implied.
    2. People are allowed to use swear words, even if it makes you feel feelings - yep I guess I just don't use swear words to articulate my thoughts.
    3. Please, do name these "usual suspects" you keep referring to. - I don't have to, yall are responding in your usual fashion and naming yourselves haha.
    4. So, you feel sorry for our children? I teach children to take responsibility for themselves, be their own advocate, and use common sense. - not sorry for them I just hope that you teach them to be sensitive towards others and treat others like you would want to be treated.
    5. I look forward to your GBCB - sheesh had to look this one up, I don't need to do some goodbye post.  I'll keep reading and responding to people that I think I can help with my input.  I'm an adult, I've been through much worse than an internet clique telling me off.

Thank you, I really appreciate you sharing your experience.  The BHs have settled down actually this morning so I'll definitely keep an eye on them throughout the day.  I was thinking of calling my OB and seeing if he has any openings tomorrow in case I'm still feeling off.
  • Dude, chill. You said yourself you hesitated to post b/c you expected this reaction. Listen, I knew damn well that telling my doc about reduced fetal movement was going to earn me a whole new round of testing (wasn't expecting a trip to L&D though) but I knew I wouldn't rest until I got the all clear so you do what you gotta do. You are having some fairly concerning symptoms... Maybe nothing but sounds like you need some peace of mind that only your doc can give.

  • I'll be the dissenter here and say based on what you've posted I'd not call the Dr unless something changes.  This, to me, is not a ZOMGS why are you posting on the interwebz type post.

However, if your gut instinct is saying to call, then call. And of course if things change - more contractions or regular/timeable ones, etc etc.

I appreciate you give it to me straight but not curt.  I actually have a message in at his office to tell him about my symptoms disappearing the next day, etc.  Waiting to hear back from him.  He's not in the office tomorrow or Wednesday so maybe I'll leave work a little early if he thinks he should see me.  Peace of mind is probably what I need most.  I just didn't know if I was overreacting to a 24 hour bug or something.

    Thanks again.

Treat others like you want to be treated? If I was making decisions that could affect my health or the health of my unborn child, I would hope that someone would call me an idiot and tell me to get my ass in gear. I wouldn't hope that people would treat me like a delicate flower and placate my idiocy just for the sake of being polite.
@megash113 Stop being such a usual suspect!

    My thoughts exactly haha!  :))

This is what I was leaning towards.  But I already left him a message so might as well see what he says.  Probably will say the same thing you just did.

Based on the contractions alone, no, but based on sudden flu like symptoms (a sign of PTL), a low grade fever (a sign of PTL), and then contractions, yes, it's time to call.  My thought is, those things went away. And from her post I understood that she'd been having BH all along, not that those were new.  ::shrug:: I'm not a Dr lol.

And she had said she'd already called so if it had been me, and the issues had gone away then I probably wouldn't call a second time. But I tend to lean more towards wait/see about everything.

But she said she called about just the flu symptoms, not the rest. Three symptoms of early labor deserve a phone call, even if you called earlier about one of them. And while BH weren't new, increasing BH to the point of having them every fifteen minutes is CERTAINLY a new symptom. Wait and see can be dangerous with PTL.

She should have called while she was packing and installing the car seat and everything else. Type A or no, I do not understand how you can be nervous enough baby is coming to install the car seat... but not call the doctor and see if there is anything you should do to keep baby from coming too early.

  • If you're scared that something is up, please call the doctor with all information before installing car seats, packing bags, and so on. I get being nervous, or about having your SO telling you that it's nothing, but go with your gut. Not his. If you think something is up make sure to let your doctor know ASAP.

    Easy enough, right?
  • I usually err on the side of caution and check with my doctor whenever things seem really fishy, but I can also understand how you feel coming on here and asking, because if your doctor is anything like mine, it helps to get an idea of what might be going on.

My sister's OB pretty much told her to come in and even sent her to L&D when she called about seemingly minor issues, which was annoying and expensive at times, but did keep an eye on things and did give her peace of mind in the end. My doctor has never seemed too curious or concerned whenever I've had issues and it's made me start to wonder if A. He's really paying due attention to my concerns, and B. If he's starting to peg me as a worry wort.

A couple of months ago, I had to call the triage nurse 3 times just to get clearance to come in for a quick check when I was telling the nurse I had a rash and symptoms resembling shingles and both the nurse and OB didn't believe me at first, but sure enough it was shingles. I have also brought up some concerns I was having a UTI a few weeks back and asked them to check my urine at the appointment, but when I called up a few weeks back, turns out they never checked it because I have a history of IC, but I haven't had symptoms this entire pregnancy. I have an appointment tomorrow and I'm bringing up the UTI question again since it's still going on and I had to spent several hours on a plane yesterday with stabbing urethral pains and the urge to go when my bladder is empty again.

I just wanted to throw this out there since I suspected that you were feeling your doc might have given you doubts about what is a legit pregnancy concern or not. The reaction on the board are about what I expected since the obvious answer is to call your doc if you're having contractions and some new symptoms, but I just wanted to add that I don't think you're an idiot for wanting some validation since your doc didn't seem too concerned if you were at home dealing with the flu in the first place.

  • @Stophoney you pretty much hit the nail on the head.  I like my doctor but since I just spoke with him on Saturday I was concerned I was seeming like a worry wort.

He did call me around lunch today and said he isn't concerned about anything and thinks I'm fine...  So yep I look like a worry wort but I guess better safe then sorry.  I'm just going to try and take it easy.  I cleaned out my desk and am finishing up my work while it's slow this week.  I guess it eases my anxiety to know that if anything should happen I have all my ducks in a row.

I truly appreciate everyone's advice and concern.

    Whoops meant this @mythaldo
  • Oh HOLY mod.  The true question is why should you get flamed when you are asking for support when you're not sure what to do or if you're indeed overreacting to symptoms?  Or you would like to hear if anyone else has been through something similar and can offer their advice????

I'm over it as I'm sure everyone else.  The end.

  • What part of the end do you not understand?

BTW, I don't think EVERYONE is so awful and I wasn't baiting them, they just have a tendency to respond like this and make themselves look horrible.  True, I do find them supportive to some but they are also curt and rude when it suits them.  I actually like some people on the board and as a STM want to help anyone that I may be able to share my own experiences with, hence why I usually ignore this specific drama of certain individuals being rude.  AT the same time, I wanted to get it off my chest how I felt and since "they" appreciate honesty and standing up for yourself they should appreciate hearing what some people think about how they "support" some of the posters.

To each their own.  I've said my piece about it.  I'm moving on.  I will continue to respond to posters on issues that I feel like I can constructively add my 2 cents too.  I truly hope everyone has a wonderful remainder of their pregnancies and get from this board what they are looking for.

  • I'm curious about what kind of responses you wanted. You ignored the "nice" versions of call your doctor and then got pissy when I said it more harshly.

You say you wanted "support". Guess what... Support doesn't always mean telling you what you want to hear. Three symptoms of pre-term labor mean you should call your doctor, even if you wanted us to pat your head and say whatever you decided was fine. Your doctor is the only one who can determine if you need to be seen.

And the concern about looking like a worry wart is so incredibly ridiculous. Calling twice doesn't even register on the doctor's radar. And even if you did sound like a "worry wart", it's better to be that than have PTL.

Trust me, doctors don't sit around and complain "oh my gosh, that patient called me for two concerns that were not a big deal! What a pain!" They complain about patients who don't call.

Wait, @rondackhiker, you mean if I go into some kind of medical distress at home there's no way for my doctor to know about it unless I go in or call and tell them? What the hell.

H wants to work in the ICU. I could look at it as job security. The more people delay calling and going in the sicker they are.

*My h isn't nearly as heartless as I am.
