Throwing food

Someone tell me you have a magical end-all to the nonsense!  Bryson eats great, but as he's nearing the end of the meal or if he doesn't like something, he throws it to Jenna.  When we tell him no, he acts like he's stretching, completely with fake yawn or stretch noises and puts the food behind his head to drop.  Positive phrases (i.e. "eat your ____" instead of "don't do ____) don't work and stern no's don't phase him.  We make him clean up everything Jenna doesn't get, but that's not helping.  I've even tried to rationalize that big boys leave food they don't want on their plates, but obvs that doesn't work either.  Help!  My dog is going to get chunky or eat something that doesn't agree with her sensitive belly!  Even if that doesn't happen, I may pull my hair out.

@hijinxWell, I made it sound like the dog thing is the big problem, but not really.  I can stop Jenna from getting it.  He just does it in public too, so we can't really take him most places now.
@laurski81 That's what I do now too.  Glad I'm not the only one pulling food away.

  • K does this too. Right down to the sneaking it behind his head. I usually take his plate when he does this and if he wants more, I will give it one piece at a time. If he still insists on throwing/dropping it, I figure he is done. I don't put too much effort into discipline during meals for fear he will go into what Jason and I have lovingly dubbed "serial killer mode" and wipe both his arms back and forth across his tray like a maniac and knock all his food on the ground and then cry that he has no more food. It's ridiculous. So we are working on just keeping him in normal baby mode during meals to prevent this, and then we will move onto teaching him not to throw/drop food. LOL

  • Hahahaha @kimmer1412 Sometimes I forget our kids are indeed kids because of how quickly they're growing and how smart they can be, but stories like that bring me back.  LOL!

  • I have also been taking away food when she starts throwing it to the dog or on the floor. Its really frustrating!! I give her a few chances to say "all done" and then we remove the tray lid. Hoping that as her language skills improve, the food throwing phase will end.

  • So last night, I made Bryson wait about 20 minutes longer for dinner, which seemed to help.  He only threw one bean.  He didn't want the spaghetti and dropped it on the tray.  I asked nicely if he could clean up and he did!  The next time he picked up spaghetti, he said "kee up" and just dropped it on the plate.  When he kept playing with it and not eating, I took the plate and asked if he wanted a banana.  He ate 1.5 with no problem.  I hope it wasn't a fluke.
