Bumpers. Again.

Okay.... so I was no bumpers for a long time, and then we had the "he keeps getting his limbs stuck" issue, so our doc said (around 6 months) that breathable bumpers were fine. Those have been working great for keeping his little hands and feet unstuck, but the past month he keeps WHACKING his head on the crib slats -- like, one time he even gave himself a bruise. So now I'm wondering -- he'll be 9 months old next week, very big sturdy baby, rolls easily, etc... do we think bumpers are ok now? I couldn't care less about the cosmetics / decor of the room, I just don't want him hitting his head! Anybody using them? Thoughts?

Now IMO they're too close to pulling up, using the bumper as a step, and launching themselves out of the crib.

We use the breathable one. It collapses if he were to step on it.

We were against them but then began to use breathable ones when he started getting his limbs stuck and after we talked to our pediatrician.

2 months after that, we were encountering the same probs as u so we switched to regular bumpers.

I never thought that I'd ever use bumpers since I do see SIDS in my profession and I am a little paranoid but all of the cases I've seen were due to bedsharing. Now I feel more comfortable about bumpers for Noah because he's constantly turning and changing positions in his sleep.

I think its fine to use them but I wouldn't advise another parent to use them because the decision is up to you. I do know many parents that use them and their babies are fine. If you do decide to do it, maybe watch him more closely for a while till you get more comfortable with them

We tied our bumpers around the top and down the rails a bit. So they aren't on the bottom where they post a suffocation risk (although they were), we had to move them to the top because that is now where he was hitting his head/chewing/banging his hands really hard.

We have used regular bumpers from the beginning. I'll probably take them off when she gets closer to pulling up and/or crawling.

I don't have a climber -- yet. He's not even crawling or pulling up yet, although I think our days are numbered on that.

Thank you all for your thoughts. Might not be worth it at this point if I will need to remove them once they could become "steps."

SS - We use the breathable ones right now, but we have a climber, so we won't be switching to the regular ones.

We dont use bumpers...but he's had a small blanket for a couple of months now, so same difference I guess, I would do them if he was banging his head.

This. We use the breathable ones now and she tries to use them as a step, although they do collapse. We will not be doing regular ones. I actually will probably be removing the breathable ones soon since we no longer seem to have the issue of limbs getting stuck or head banging anymore.

We took them out because he uses them to climb over. Climbing out his crib seems to be his favorite past time.

A definite no for regular bumpers. I think breathable ones are fine but we really have no intention of using them.

We have breathable bumpers and always have. She knocks her head on the rails occasionally, but its not a problem. I'm not worried about her climbing out because we'll have her in a bed once she's walking.

I picked SS. We have no bumpers right now because it hasn't been an issue for DD. With DS we put them in at about 9 mos for the limbs stuck/head banging reasons. He never attempted to escape the crib or climb on them in all the time they were in there, which was until we moved him to a toddler bed at 21mos.

We like you were not using bumpers because of the dangers. But my LO was always getting her arms and legs stuck in it..... one day she almost broke her arm in the crib and I cried and was scared to leave her alone in the crib again. I put them on the next night. I put them on as "safe" as I could in my mind. LO can roll, crawl, and maneuver anyway she needs to and her crib is right next to my bed so I feel safe with our situation. Since then she hasn't gotten stuck once and she actually goes to sleep easier because she doesn't see everything in the room when she is laying down.

We've had breathable ones for awhile. LO woke up bloody murder screaming one night because his foot was caught. I had a heart attack and bought the bumpers the next day.

Am I the only person who has mesh bumpers just because of pacifiers falling out of the crib? I would never put those pillow-bumpers up for head banging because I have seen her too many times asleep with her face smushed up against the breathable ones. I would just let her figure that one out on her own.
She has a ball with the mesh ones. She likes to lay on her back and kick them down with her heels. I also think she falls asleep quicker with not being able to see everything around her clearly while laying down.

We have a beautiful set of traditional bumpers that my mom made for DD1 but we never used in the crib. I ended up using them as teething barriers when she was teething. She would stand in the crib and try to gnaw on the crib during her naps. I took the bumpers, folded them around the top rail and tied them on. They were cute and functional!

We've always had just regular bumpers on the crib. She has been quite the roller in her crib and I know they have stopped her from smacking her head all the time.

They may have to come out soon though, especially once she starts pulling up... Lately I keep finding her on her back with her feet hanging out through the bars above the bumpers, so I don't think they are as useful as they used to be for us.
