thumb sucking

My LO found her thumb!!! Although I think it's freaking adorable it scares the shit out of me because I sucked my thumb for way longer than I'd like to admit - which led to braces and this awful contraption that I had to put in my mouth.

Anyone else have a thumb sucker??

Yep! Madeline has found hers a few times. And since you're afraid to fess up, I will go first... I sucked my thumb until I was 11. I didn't care at all. I was obsessed! Hahaha

  • I used to work with a girl in her 20s that still sucked her thumb.
He is starting to prefer to suck on his hands instead of the pacifier so I do the same as @natalie2290

ha ha ok well I have you beat I was probably 13. I loved it! She is actually starting to spit out the paci a lot now. She used to love it but prefers to show everyone how she can stuff her whole fist in her mouth. Haha

  • Mine loves her fist. She did find a few fingers yesterday and did a rockstar pose. She thrusts her tongue too much to keep apacifier in.

  • Oh yeah...DD has sucked her fingers/fist since the third week of her life. Gonna be fun trying to stop that when she gets older lol

  • We have ultrasounds where LO was sucking her thumb and as soon as she came out she put her teeny tiny thumb in her mouth. She usually has a paci but if not she goes for her thumb or fist. I don't really mind except she ends up with saliva up to her wrists and all over her face.

I also sucked my thumb for a loooong time.

  • He sucks his entire fist . . .

I was also a thumb sucker. Sad.

  • I've also got a lil thumb sucker on my hands, and I also try to swap with the paci but he's already starting to pull that out and stick his fingers back in instead! I sucked my thumb until I was about 7, I'd hate for him to have that habit too, it's hard to break!

  • Mine tries to shove his whole fist into his mouth, and sometimes goes for both hands at the same time. I have noticed that he only does it when hungry, or over xmas I realized that it's his comfort thing when in other ppls laps. He doesn't really do it that much at home, so I am hoping it's not going to be a bad habit to break down the road (still won't take a paci).

  • Our kiddo has been sucking her thumb for a few weeks now.  It started with just her fist, but now she's found her thumb.  I don't mind for the most part, I've read it's natural.  Once she hits 6 months we'll probably work on replacing her thumb more with her paci if it continues.
  • I have a fist sucker. Who also hates her paci.

I figure that is the least worrisome of my battles right now. We got our night time sleep back to being manageable. Now I'm dealing with needing to be on mom the whole time during the day. If sucking her fist gets her to in the swing long enough to eat, quick household chores etc, I'll take it.

Same here. It's either his fist or my nipple.

Lol ... plus I figure the whole fist won't always fit in his mouth ....

  • I can't get her to take a pacifier but she loves to suck on her hands. I try to take her hands away but she gets mad.

  • Cece has found hers a couple times. I sucked my thumb until I was 7 or 8, which is why there's a gap in my front teeth. I haven't taken it away from her though, it's just too cute!

  • I've been shocked that dd3 hasn't shown any signs of being a thumb sucker. I sucked mine til 11 and mh sucked his til 6. Dd1 is a thumb sucker and dd2 is a finger sucker. IDGAF about it.

It's not a guarantee that it will cause any damage. Despite sucking out thumbs way too long, mh and I never needed braces. All three of our girls already have other mouth issues that will likely mean they will need braces, so I won't begrudge them some self soothing.

@sweettwilight16 my mom always tells me not to let her do it, but it IS so damn cute lol - plus I really can't stop her.
