Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

potty training too young

i have a 18 month old and wondered if people thought it was too young to start potty training.  i am due in july with our second and would really like to be mostly out of diapers for her by then.  any suggestions if okay on how to go about it?

Re: potty training too young

  • i was potty trained at 18 months, never too early imo

  • Potty training should not take 1/2 a year. It should take 2-3 days. If it takes longer they aren't ready. You don't need candy or stickers. If you do,they aren't ready. Wait until your child is ready. Which may be at 18 months but it mat be at 3 1/2. It your kids will be 2 years apart you should be prepared fr 2 in diapers.
  • I agree with beachgirl - you should wait until she's ready.  One of my colleagues works with kids with bowel and bladder dysfunction (otherwise healthy, normal little kiddos).  One of those most common thing she finds is that these kids were potty trained earlier than they should have been.  It CAN be too early - shouldn't be just a convenience.
  • We PT DS at 17 months old.  We would have done it earlier but we waited until we were on baby leave.  It was super easy, took 4 days.  We did it for daytime, naps and bedtime.  When DD#1 was 15 months old we PT her and it took 2 days very simple and it was for daytime, naps and bedtime.  They are now 4 & 5 years old and we've never experienced regressions, etc.  When DD#2 is 15 months old I plan on doing it then as well.  In my experience (I've PT my kids and some of my friends) its easy to do it prior to the 20 month mark when the "no phase" hits.  Before that, its fun and a game and they just want to please you.  I've had friends trying for months to PT their 2 1/2 & 3 year olds.
  • 20 months is supposed to be the golden month for PTing. It didn't work out for us w/ DS (but he has some sensory and kidney issues). However, I do think my DD will be ready next month so we'll give it a shot with her.

I know you are trying to avoid 2 in diapers but from my experience that was a lot easier than carting the baby to the bathroom all the time w/ DS (I'm talking out in public). Lol. It's not going to be "easy" either way. :)

  • I agree that you need to wait until they are ready, but I disagree that PTing is only supposed to take 2-3 days.

Both of my kids were ready in terms of wanting to do it and not wanting diapers, etc. But they needed help and it took a month or so. Was I supposed to stop training b/c it took more than 3 days?

Every kid is different, blah blah blah. We didn't do 3 day potty training boot camp. We did it our own way and it's been successful.
This.  It took my DD about 3- 4 weeks to go from diapers to dry during the day.  I would not try it myself unless you were sure she seemed ready.  I think it's expecting a lot to be trained before the baby comes.  2 in diapers is not so bad really.
