Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Sleep Woes :(

Hi everyone :)

I can't believe I'm posting on the Toddler board now. I miss my squishy baby! :(

Our son has always been a pretty good sleeper. The problem we are having isn't with sleeping through the night. Once he is asleep, he will sleep upwards of 10 hours. The issue is that he won't GO to sleep. We start putting him to bed around 7:00 and he will NOT fall asleep until around 11. Weekends make it not so bad because he can sleep in, but during the week, we have to wake up at 5:30 for work, and he goes with us to go to the sitter's. When he doesn't fall asleep until 11, he is only getting maybe 6 hours of sleep. This worries me.

We follow a routine every night (Bath, PJs, Book) but he just will NOT sleep. He tosses and turns and fights it until he just eventually crashes.

Does anyone have any advice? :(

I'm so lost, and I think he is now too old to sleep train :(

Re: Sleep Woes :(

  • Perhaps keeping a consistent wake up time will naturally introduce an earlier bed time??

::poster runs and hides because she just suggested a 5:30 wake up call on weekends::

  • I agree with PP, kids do really well with consistent routines.

The other thing I would be questioning are his naps - what time are these/or is it. For example: if he is down to only one nap but it's in the afternoon, perhaps it's a too late nap which is leaving him 'not sleepy' when you are putting him down.

Also, how long are the day time naps. He might be sleeping a lot during the day, in order to catch-up on the lack of night sleep.

What is his normal routine during the day? Maybe this can help with some more advice.
  • I agree with PP about not letting him sleep as late as he wants on weekends.  Maybe till 6 or so?  We wake at the same time no matter what day of the week really.  Does he seem genuinely tired when you begin your bedtime?

Also, I do not think he is too old to sleep train.
  • we had this problem with my LO. he is 16 months and we just sleep trained him. we didnt need to when he was younger. but around 14 months he started wanting to stay up later and later. Or he would wake frequently. Our pedi said to just stick with our routine and put him to bed. So we did. he gets he bath at 7:45  pjs and milk. brush teeth play with the puppy  8:30 its story time then off to bed. he fusses for about 10 mins then is out and sleeps all night  just stay consistent with a routine and he will learn  good luck
