I'm going to start offering solids to DD. She's been doing great with cereal, and her pedi told me it would be ok to start her on some. Now my question is, what did you offer to your DC first? Also, how much did you make of one batch? I don't want to make too much in case DD gets a reaction or doesn't like it. I would appreciate any advice and recommendations you can offer. TIA.
Re: To the ladies that make their babyfood
The first thing I made was applesauce.
I did a whole bag of apples and only got maybe 3 ice cube trays full by the time they were cooked the pureed (36 ounces total, 1 cube = 1 ounce, 12 cubes in a tray).
We started DS on 2 ounce servings but now he's up to almost 5 ounces a serving. He likes to eat, LOL.
I started with sweet potatoes and froze 2-3oz portions in individual containers. Ice cube trays also work really well. Bananas also worked well and all I had to do was drop them in the food processor. I made kind of a lot, so I guess I would have been SOL if she didn't like it.
Word to the wise though- at first it may seem like she doesn't like it at all. Give her a few days to get used to the idea.
I also wanted to add:
Now that DS is up to such large serving sizes - I no longer use ice cube trays - doesn't make enough!! LOL.
I freeze them into Gladware 4oz. plastic containers (the disposable tupperware kind) and pull them out of the freezer as needed. Works great!
we started with veggies on the recommendation of our pedi: squash, peas, sweet potato, and green beans. she loves green things now.then we did avocado, banana and apple. this week we're trying pears.
i would make a batch and freeze what i couldn't use in the first three-four days. (half a squash, a whole sweet potato, 1/2 lb of green beans, etc). i freeze in ice cube trays and then transfer to ziploc bags. we started offering her one ice cube sized serving of food. we've now worked up to two ice cube sized servings. hth.
DS's first foods were mashed avocado, then mashed bananas, then cooked, mashed pears.
The nice thing about the avocado is that you can make guacamole from the rest. If you put some lime/lemon juice on it, it also refrigerates and freezes quite well. I use old baby food jars to freeze in (we have a few because we just use store-bought food when we travel), but many people put it into ice cube trays.
For the banana, we just mashed up a little hunk and when he liked it, we mashed up some more. We ate the rest of the banana.
The mashed pear was really runny, so we actually mixed it with cereal.
You can always freeze the food and try it again later. DS has disliked some foods the first time he tried them, but then loved them when I tried them again another day.
I think Lily's first solid was pears. She LOVED them. After that we did apples. I make just two or three pears/apples at a time, which is enough for about one ice cube tray. Other good first foods are bananas and avacados, which are nice because you just mash them up and maybe add a little BM or formula to make it runnier if you need to.
So far, she's loved everything she's eaten and hasn't had any reactions.
