What's the most terrifying moment of your life (thus far)

I'm bored, lol.

Mine? Being stuck in an elevator on the 8th floor of a hotel while at the beach this past summer. It just shut off with the doors cracked, thank God we weren't between floors. I think it was because too many buttons were pressed it just shut off. I was on there with a bunch of 13-15 year olds and was cussing up a storm, freaking the hell out. We pried the doors open and you never saw anyone haul ass as quickly as I did up the stairs.

I continued to take the stairs the rest of the trip and our room was on the 15th floor. It still scares the hell out of me to think about it.

Edited: In response to Rich In Love's #1

Spring break 2007 I was at the beach with a group of girlfriends getting ready to go out to La Vela in P.C.B. We're were all dressed like little hooches and I got into the elevator (all my stuff happens in an elevator) and this guy ran in behind me and started trying to shut to door with his hands. I flipped my shit and ran the hell out. I thought he was going to abduct me or something. Very creepy looking dude.

  • I fell down an escalator when I was little.  To this day, I am deathly afraid of them!

  • Probably a couple of months ago when my FIL called me at work FREAKING OUT because he'd heard from my DH's cousin/co-worker that DH had cut his hand really bad (he is a carpenter) and they were rushing him to a hospital because the 1st hospital thought it was too severe for them to handle.

He kept peppering into the convo about how they weren't sure if they were going to be able to save his hand, if he'd have any mobility, etc etc.

Turns out he needed 13 stitches and no surgery. The first hospital was just a walk-in clinic and they didn't do stitches. My DH didn't even nick the tendons or anything. It was horrible though, especially since DH's cousin didn't call me, he called my FIL (which I still haven't figured out why)

  • Mine is similar to yours actually.  I got stuck in an elevator when we had that huge blackout on the eastern seaboard.  At the time everyone still thought it could be a terrorist attack.  I wasn't so scared about the elevator, but I was petrified we were going to get blown up or something.  It was some scary sh*t.

  • 1) Being nearly carjacked when I was 19. It was like 1 a.m. and I was dropping off my roommate at a party and was on my way back to the sorority house and I was at a stop light and some guy slammed on my passenger window and then opened the door. I ran the red light and my hear raced for hours after. I have no idea what his plans were, I don't even want to think about it.

    2) The night DH and I were driving over Donner Pass in Northern California with no chains and in a blizzard. I thought we were going to die or drive off a cliff. Terrifying!

  • I was in a pretty bad car accident when I was 15.  We were in a jeep in the winter and rolled it a few times.  Luckily, none of us were seriously injured.  The driver was thrown out of the jeep and broke his shoulder, but I thought he was dead at first.
  • when my dad had a stroke. he was only 50 at the time.

when our house was totally destroyed in a tornado when i was 8.

when we were in a wreck where everyone in the other car died when i was 5. . it was their fault.

  • Mine is an elevator story as well! I was in Ohio for a softball tournament. We got in the elevator in the hotel, stopped on the next floor and 8 extreemly overweight people decided to squeeze in w/ us. We ended up exceeding the weight capacity and the elevator shut down. We were stuck for a half hour while we could hear the metal for the elevator creeaking ang and moaning. One of the girls thought it would be funny to stat jumping up and down. Yea, we heard a snap and the elevator shifted! When the firemen got there we wer stuck b/w 2 floors. They used the jaws of life to open the door and literally just started yanking us out of the elevator from the top and bottom. The elevaot was out of order the rest of the week.

To this day I HATE riding in elevators and will take the stairs if they are available.

  • I was in a car accident two weeks ago, and I was terrified something had happened to the baby! It was absolutely the most terrifying moment ever, until I was rushed to the hospital and we heard his little heart beat! Then we saw him on the ultrasound and everything was fine, I never cried so much in my entire life!
  • I have another one.  About 2 years ago dh was working at a steel mill.  I turned on the news and there was the plant he was working at on the time.  His building had caught fire and there were several people stranded on the roof.  I called his cell, but it was turned off (it was in his locker).  Several people died, but dh got out with minor burns.  He does have scarring from it though on his chest, legs, and arms.

  • Pretty much any time I fly (I need 5 zanacs AND wine to get me through a 4 hour flight, and I probably almost kill myself...needless to say no flying during this pregnancy)  and...

On an excursion while on our honeymoon in Aruba.  I have never been so terrified in my life. We had an amateur driving an open land rover and he almost rolled the whole car of us all the cliffe and into the ocean.

  • i got stuck in an elevator before too but i had some drinks in me so i didn't seem to handle it too poorly. the worst part was a girl was super drunk and she started to hyperventilate over being stuck.
  • Last Jan i was about 34-36 weeks pg w/ DD. it was a stressful time. i was on bedrest for preterm labor, that was scary enough.

One night i was woken up by my neihbors in the apt above us yelling and running around. i was pissed off so I was going to go and tell them off. DD woke up and went into her room. I could hear the neihbors right outside her window. I looked out to see them in their pajamas on their phones and black smoke poured out of there fron door. i screamed for DH to wake up. I grabed DD and wraped her in her comforter DH grabed my purse his wallet and the car keys and we ran outside into the street. They lost everything. Our apt had minimal damage just some smoke and water damage. It was so terrifing i still have a hard time sleeping at night because i am terrified of a fire. We had to live in a hotel for over a month while they repaired the non livable building. i lived in a hotel on my due date.

They'd have to carry me out limp. I would've died. Absolutely died.

What an inconsiderate biitch! Jumping up and down? Hell no.

  • probably one of my car accidents i was in.  i was with my mom and we got hit and it flipped our car on the side and broke the axles.  they never figured out who hit us cause they ran.  or probably when my father had a stroke when he was 42.  i was in california with my sister and getting a phone call from my mom crying at the hospital was horrifying.  never want to go through that again.  i was too far away to do anything and not being able to see him was the worst.

OK you asked for it.....and it isn't MUD.  I spent 10 years of my life flying for the airlines as a pilot (Boeing 737, 757 , 747).  While I was flying cargo from Luxembourg to Hong Kong we had the smell of smoke.  We were over central Russia....ie close to Siberia.  The mechanic on board went down to check it out and the entire main deck was filled with smoke.  Not good.  Russian controllers speak very poor english so when I declared the emergency he acted like he didn't understand.  I hate fire! especially in an airplane at altitude.  So I feared I would become a really bad headline on CNN.  However, we landed safely in Perm, Russia.  Kind of in the same location in Russia as Iowa is in the US.  We had no visas, no cargo, a Chinese flight number but a US registered airplane.  They thought we were stealing the airplane and threatened to put us in a Russian jail until someone from our company came to get us.  Somehow, the captain and flight engineer were mechanics and helped fix the plane while I talked us out of there.  I think they were more shocked a woman was flying than anything else.

  • When I was vacationing in Domincan with my sister and cousin, we decided to go on the banana boat ride.  While on the banana, the driver of the boat thought it would be funny ot take us out extrenly far, so far that we couldn;t even see the beach anymore.  At this point he was gonig so fast, and we were in such deep waters, he made a sharp turn and flipped all of us off the banana.  The terror started at that point, and we all struggled to get back on to the banana as fast as possible, which was quite difficult being in such deep waters, and with it being so unsturdy. Well once back on, he decided to flip us agian, at which point we all swam over to the boat and freaked on him and told him to bring us back to shore....

I've had 2 really bad flights in my life, since then, I'm freaked out. Holy shit, Russia? That's scary, what was wrong with the plane?

  • 1) When I was 10 we were in a tornado. It was like 11:30 at night, so I was in bed, and my aunt ran in my room, grabbed me and the 5 of us huddled in a closet. Not much longer the tornado ripped our house to pieces and we lost everything, but everyone survived so that's all that matters.

    2) DH used to be a concert promoter so we had a lot of late nights at clubs in Little Rock. One night we were leaving at like 2-3am and as we were pulling out of the parking lot a guy walked across the lot, turned towards us and pointed a gun. I was soo tired and out of it, it didn't even sink in what he was doing. I just slowly drove past him and then realized it, I was so freaked!

  • My other scariest moment was right about a year ago. My DD had been a little bit weird at daycare during the day. I got home later than normal and my DH had laid her down early for  bed saying she was cranky and weird. She started to cry shortly after I got home so I went in to check her and see her very quick. It was pretty dark in her room and I went to rock her for a bit in the glider. When I sat down, the faint light from the window glimpsed over her face and her entire right side of her face was hugely swollen, especially around her mouth.

She was all pale looking too. I called the nurse on call at our Pedis office and they went through this whole checklist- We were to take her to ER immediately. One of us had to sit in the back seat with her to make sure she was breathing. If she at any time stopped breathing we were to call 911 and have an ambunlence meet us part way.

We both cried the entire way to the hopsital. After about 20 minutes in ER the swelling started to go down and it turns out she'd bumped her face at daycare, bit her lip and it just didn't swell up right away. I thought she was having some crazy alleric reaction or something. It turned out fine but it was so scary

  • you are much safer on a plane than being in a car. you have a greater chance of getting in a car accident on your way to the airport than having trouble on a plane. i hate flying but its because of my motion sickness. i think i might literally be the one person with an aerospace engineering degree that is afraid to fly. i just pop an ativan, plug in the ipod, and hold one of those swishy pillows with the little beans in them.
  • It was 9/11 - DH and I had been married a little over a month.  He is a pilot and was flying out of Logan the morning of 9/11.  I was at work - teaching kindergarten.  The social worker, principal, and an intern show up in my classroom and ask me to come with them while the intern stayed with my class.  They sat me down in the SWers office and asked me if my husband was flying that morning.  I said, yes...out of Logan.  They told me the news and I FREAKED!  Luckily, it was not his flight, but it was the most terrifying moment of my life and I do not think I actually relaxed until I heard his voice.

  • Some of you have some really incredible stories.  Wow.  Mine seems minor in comparison.

When I was 16 I was in a pretty bad car accident.  I was driving, lost control (for no real good reason other than stupidity) and rolled the car 4-5 times before being stopped by a tree.  My BFF was in the car with me and we were both fine, but we had to get out of the car through the sunroof and it was terrifying.  I'll never forget that sound/feeling....  I'm a very cautious and alert driver now.

  • Belle,

To keep the electrical equipment  (radios, navigation equipment, etc) cool there are fans the recirculate the air.  Their intake is located in a bad position which is prone to taking in pen caps and other stuff dropped.  So something went through that fan and chewed it up until it wouldn't spin.  It burned it self up.

To be honest I thought the mechanic was burning our food again!  He was an awful kitchen bi@#$.

    LOL

  • I was in a minor accident that could have been serious.

I was driving from the DC area back home (Eastern PA) and I was on one of the beltways where all of the 'I95's' are merging.  I ended up between 2 tractor trailers.  The tanker (silver round one) truck on my left came into my lane.  My car ended up between the wheel wells (since they stick out on a tanker truck).  He hit the rear of my car near the gas tank.  Luckily, the truck moved back over and I was able to stay in my lane so i didn't bounce into the box tractor trailer on my right.

The fvucker wasn't going to stop!  I had to flash my lights to get him to pull over.  He gets out and says, "oh, did you hit me?"  Ass!!

So many things could have gone differently!  I didn't think about it then but once I got home, I was freaked out!
