Anyone's else's baby tongue tied?

Are they having any issues? Eatting? Being fussy etc....

Re: Anyone's else's baby tongue tied?

  • My baby was. She had it clipped at 5 days old. She is fine, but I have to pump and feed her that way. She still will not latch, she has once but not again since.

  • A dawn, could you tell a difference in her? My doc doesn't seem to think its bad enough to get clipped but he tries to latch so hard on the bottles that he makes loud clicking noises and tends to choke a little when he eats. I'm trying to fig out if I should push the issue of getting his clipped!
  • DS was. We opted not to clip since he nursed just fine right off the bat. He's two now and it hasn't caused any issues so far.

  • Leah that's good to know! I worry about him eating and his speech when he gets older... He seems to suck extremely hard when eating and looses latch on bottle a lot.
  • Yes M is 100 % tongue tied and can not latch onto me and is very fussy with his bottles. He is getting his released in January, it maybe too late then to try to bf but hopefully he will take to his bottle better.
  • V had it done at 1 week. It helped immediately with her latch, but she is still super noisy with a bottle. They also clipped the inside of her upper lip.
  • My LO is and it has affected his latch on my breast even though it is a very mild one. My husband and I decided not to get it clipped and I will just exclusively pump so he is still getting my milk.(it has not affected his latch on the bottle)

What was the reasoning for clipping her upper lip? Both DS and DD are lip tied. It didn't effect DS bf'ing and DD seems to be fine as well. I had talked to the ped about DS when he was an infant and he told me not to worry. He said it would likely separate on its own (likely by DS hitting his mouth on something) and not to freak out because they bleed a lot.

  • DS2 was tongue tied and we didn't get it clipped until he was 9 months. His doctor didn't think he needed it clipped but once he started finger foods i noticed he couldn't swallow them good plus we were worried about his speech. We decided to do but because he wasn't a newborn he had to be put to sleep to do it. I would say do it now while your baby is still a newborn.

  • Both of my sons have a tongue tie and a lip tie. We chose not to get DS1's corrected and our breastfeeding relationship was unsuccessful because of it. We ended up having to have it corrected when he was 17 months old.

With DS2 I was proactive and had the tongue tie clipped on day 2. So far we have a successful breastfeeding relationship.

Based on my experiences I would recommend having it corrected sooner rather than later if you plan to have it done.
  • I would rather go ahead and get his clipped but my pedi says that he shoukdnt be having a prob w eatting or down the road. Seems as if she doesn't want me to get it clipped. She suggested a swallow study??
  • My son was, and we opted to have the pedi clip it on day 2 in hospital. Didn't even bleed, and he latched on much better immediately after.
  • I'm tongue tied. I was bottle fed due to latching problems. I've not had my tongue clipped. Doctors say its a cosmetic thing.
    Welcome Lily Anna!

This is exactly how my sons dr was and I listened to him. It did cause problems and it ended up being more expensive because he had to be put to sleep. Go with your gut and it get it done now if you feel it's gonna cause problems.

  • It seems pedis view tongue ties as no biggie. Ours said it's no big deal and our LO had one. He could feed fine but was tearing me up when he nursed.

OP can LO stick his tongue out past their bottom lip?

We got it fixed because if I were lo I would hate to not be able to lick an ice cream when I was older or struggle with speech because we opted not to get it fixed. It took two seconds and he was just fine. Honestly I could think of so many situations that it would be an inconvenience later in life.

Honestly, the ENT dr said she needed it, and I just went with it. FTM newborn haze = researching it didn't occur to me. They said it would make her feed better, and thus less fussy. Those were magical words to me.
  • An LC said she has a posterior tongue tie. Pedi says she doesn't think she has one and wouldn't clip it anyway if it's posterior. She can get her tongue past her gum line so I guess it's not too bad. This thread has me worried about blindly believing my pedi tho now!

Take your baby to an ENT if you're not sure what to do. They are a specialist.

My LO was tongue tied. Both her pedi and LC said we would benefit if we got her tongue clipped because we were having latching issues. We went to the ENT and he agreed. It did not make any difference for us. She was never able to
Did you go back to the LC after? Tongue tied babies learn to nurse incorrectly and have to relearn their latch after the tie is clipped.
