Camilla

"Say" it for me?

Would you say KAH-mill-UH or KAH-mee-LAH?

Or something else?  And do you like it?  Just curious.

  • I had an intern named Camilla.  She pronounced it with the "mill" sound.  Her nn was Cami.  I thought it was cute and she was in college so it "grew" well.

Like this too.  The name is okay. It'd probably grow on me the more I heard it though.  (I seriously just repeated Camilla to myself about 10 times - ahah).

Don't worry, I'm working on it.

  • I think Camilla is just darling no matter which way you say it, but I typically say Kah-mill-uh as it's how I've heard it most.

Thanks for all of the responses!  I am sort of shocked that no one that answered instinctively says KAH-meel-AH-- I figured it would be more of a mix.

I am not sure which one I prefer, TBH, but this name has been in my head all weekend so I was hoping to get general feedback.

  • Kah-mee-lah was definitely my initial response. Do you happen to be a Spanish speaker? This seems to be the natural way to pronounce it if you are.

My fam is Italian-- so that's probably why I have the other pron in my brain.

  • Camilla gets the "mill" pronunciation and Camille gets the "meal" pronunciation.  That's the difference for me.

  • mill - like a saw mill.

    ka-mill-uh

I know this one is confusing because Camille is pronounced ka-meal like "I just ate a big meal."

Camille is at the top of our girls list right now! I also love Camilla but Camille sounds nicer with our last name.

Not confusing-- both pronunciations are legit.  I was sort of just wondering which one was more intuitive.

  • My association with it would be Prince Charles's wife and that pronunciation.  Of course, then I go to what that history is and his tampon comment and I just can't.  I know many wouldn't get that reference, especially with a name paired to a little girl, but I just can't.
  • @helenahhandbasket - for most people it is confusing because the pronunciation is counter-intuitive when you consider how Camille is pronounced. Both are NOT correct or legit pronunciations for Camilla if you are an American English speaker. If you have an accent or live outside of the US, maybe Camilla can be "ka-meal-uh" but that is not the correct English pronunciation.

I know about Camilla Parker-Bowles, but I like the name enough to overlook that association. Hopefully it'll fade a bit with the next generation. I don't want this adorable name tainted!

  • @thecraftykoala Not to beat a dead horse, but here's the BTN page about Camilla.

Yes, one pronunciation is the "foreign" one, but both are correct.  It's like saying the only correct pronunciation of Carolina is Cah-ro-line-uh and that Cah-roh-lee-nah is incorrect.
