Nursery Furniture Question

STMs or anyone who has looked into this, have you thought about a rocker/glider?

We are really considering just getting a straight up La-Z-Boy rocker/recliner for the nursery. STMs, did anyone do this or wish you would have?

If this is an awful idea, that's cool. I'm just curious.

Re: Nursery Furniture Question

  • All my friends who have kids have a glider and love it.
  • Loading the player...
  • We have the rocking chair MIL used with DH. It's a solid oak one and it gets used a lot. I would love yo have something comfy like a glider or recliner, especially in the first few weeks/months when you are up for MON feedings.

  • I have a glider with the glider foot rest, I love it! Its so comfy. I used it for nursing DS when he was an infant and now we use it for reading books before bed. The footrest was key for me, I love being able to put my feet up while rocking DS.
  • We have a glider, but there have been multiple times I wished it reclined. My only concern is when baby gets mobile and the possibility for pinched fingers and stuff.

  • It won't necessarily be a Lazboy, but something along those lines. I've sat in the wooden gliders before and they just aren't all that comfortable to me.

  • We got a rocker/glider when my soon was born and never used it and really uncomfortable but when we moved we moved our recliner/rocker in there and I love it. I use it more know then ever before
  • I had a glider for dd - that's often where I bf and I LOVED the chair - so so comfortable

Our glider isn't wooden, looks similar to the PB baby ones. It's more like an armchair, very comfy.

Same thing we did for our last LO. Love the glider and foot rest. Almost 10 years later and our youngest DS loves to rest across the foot rest and "glide" back and forth. Looking forward to using it once again!

  • We had both and the only reason I preferred my rocker over the La Z Boy was that I had a foot rest which helped me rock easier and it was a little more comfortable. I can't reach the floor with my La Z Boy and so it's a little harder to try and rock a baby but it's not impossible.

Also I kind of liked gliding better than the rocking back and forth motion.

I would just go check out some gliders at BRU or BBB and see what you think.

  • I have a glider with an ottoman for DS. I like it, but sometimes wish I had a recliner/rocker like a lazy-boy that was a little more plush for all of the late night feedings.

  • We had a glider with DD but we never used it.  It was just a catch-all place for her junk.  We never rocked her to sleep so we sold it after awhile.  We just would sit in my recliner in the living room which is right outside her room.

  • I have a glider and love it.
  • I had a glider for each of the first two. The second glider was a craigslist cheapie. I wish I'd had a reclining rocker of some sort. I rocked both babies and it would have been nice to just lean back and go to sleep especially with DS who demanded to be held.

  • I had a glider (with the ottoman) and rarely used it after the first 2 weeks or so.  Such a waste of money... I would like to think I'm not stupid, but I could never get the chair portion to rock while having my feet up and so I would get more annoyed about it than anything else.
  • We have a glider with a foot stool. Love it! Very comfy and I think in the future we will bring it into our family room.

  • I didn't have a glider for DS, but really wish I did. I always rocked him in our Lazy-Boy in the living room. I will definitely have one for this baby, but I don't like the look of the typical gliders sold in BRU. I want more of the PBK style, but I don't like the price. Lol!

  • We got a lazy boy but it was really too big so we moved it to the living room and got a Dutalier glider with ottoman. I cannot imagine not having it. I still use it to rock DD when she is sick.

  • A comfy chair in nursery is one thing several moms have told me they regret not getting. We looked at BRU this weekend because I want a chair that doesn't look like a nursery chair and looks like the PB ones. Was happy to see that you can customize with fabric choices at BRU! We will probably do a gliding chair and ottoman from there.
  • We got a lazy boy rocker recliner because I am short and felt that most of the gliders were simply too big for my short legs. We also thought it would be perfect to move into our living room once DS got older.  It's super comfortable. And now will be going into this LO's nursery.

another plus that I love is the raised foot rest. I really used it more for night time nursing and sometimes we just stayed asleep on the recliner and it was so comfortable.

  • We got a recliner with DS1 and will still use it with #3. I loved the big padded arms for nursing, the footrest when I needed it and being able to sleep on it in the nursery if I wanted to since it lays almost flat.

  • We went the recliner route. It can go in the living room once we're done and it's more comfortable to sleep in if the baby is having a rough night and you don't bed share. Many a nights is spent sleeping in that chair in our home.

  • I didn't read any responses but we are in love with our la-z-boy. It's the only brand that you can recline and rock at the same time. If you buy from their store, you can put a glider on of you'd rather glide instead of rock. We actually just recovered an old one because it was smaller than anything I could find, and was pretty easy. Seriously. In love. And you can't really get your fingers stuck in the normal position which is also a plus when baby becomes mobile.
  • I had a glider, and I liked it fine, but when ds2 was about 6 months old-and still waking entirely too often-I bought a smaller leather recliner. I've never looked back.

  • I didn't have anything with my first. Well that's not true, I had a wooden glider someone gave me but it was literally impossible for me to nurse in it until she was around 3 months and then it was still very uncomfortable. I had a twin bed in her room that I would sit on and nurse and could put pillows all around me. This experience tho showed me exactly what I wanted for the next time around. I wanted a glider RECLINER with a wide seat base and arms that were not high. This way, I could adjust with pillows or whatever myself for what would work at any particular time. I searched and searched for this chair. Finally found it ON CLEARANCE at a furniture store around me!!! It was like $450 or something, which I felt was more than reasonable considering the cost of gliders I saw at baby stores. I say definitely go for the recliner factor. I can't tell you how many times I wished for the ability to lean back a bit during all those motn feedings as well as nights I had to sleep in my uncomfortable recliner downstairs with the baby.

  • We have a rocking chair that my mom reupholstered for us. I sort of regret accepting her offer. We barely use it and it takes up so much space in her room. We just added the toddler bed to her room and all the furniture barely fits. Seems like a shame for something that we only ever used once a month or so.

  • When choosing a glider, go for comfort.  If you're gonna breastfeed, you especially need a comfortable chair you can sleep in while nursing.  You'll be glad you spent extra on the chair.  It is the most important item you'll buy for the nursery.

  • I'm a FTM and I'm definitely looking for a chair.
  • We have a recliner-type chair in there and it is totally worth it.  You wan't to get something you'll be comfortable too when you're up nursing/rocking a sick babe, etc.

  • Thanks ladies! I think we are going to go the rocker/recliner route. We definitely want something we can sleep in and then also use in a basement or living room later.

  • We had a hand-me-down glider last time and I stipulated to DH that if he wanted another kid, we were getting something more comfortable so last year we bought a La-Z-Boy rocker recliner. It'll be so much more comfortable to doze off in.
  • I don't like the gliding motion. We have a reclining stuffed chair downstairs that we will slipcover and attach a rocker mechanism to the bottom.
  • Go for the lazy boy!! Make it so your comfy!!
  • I love our Lay Z Boy gliding recliner that we got for when ds was a baby.  It is more comfortable than a glider and looks more like real furniture, so we can use it for longer without it looking like baby furniture.  I got a nursing stool like this one to use while I was nursing: https://www.amazon.com/My-Brest-Friend-Adjustable-Nursing/dp/B003OZ3BPE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1388442649&sr=8-2&keywords=nursing+stool
