Scarlet fever and babies?

Daycare called today and told me that one of the kids has scarlet fever.  Luckily, C has been out of daycare since Friday because he's been sick with a regular cold.  I've Googled scarlet fever to try to figure out how contagious it is or if it's of particular concern for babies, but all the information seems really generic.  Should I be worried about taking C back to daycare tomorrow?  (Obviously they'll have disinfected everything, but I don't want to take him if it's likely that other kids will be brewing the same illness.)

Re: Scarlet fever and babies?

  • Wow...I didn't realize that was still around. I would call doctor on this one and ask one of the nurses.

  • Scarlett fever = strep throat right? So I would assume it would be a risk if the kids are putting the same items in their mouths.

  • I had it as ann adult. It was miserable. It's a variant of strep, so easily treatable with antibiotics but can be very dangerous. Watch for a fever and sandpaper like rash. The rash is easy to mistake for hives. If it were me I'd touch base with your pediatrician and ask if he/she recommends your LO stay away from daycare.
  • Thanks for the info, ladies.  I'll give the pediatrician a call and see what he says, but otherwise I may just play it safe and keep C home through New Year's.

  • Yikes, that's scary I hope your LO doesn't get it!
  • I'm pretty sure scarlet fever is strep throat that has not been treated and gets worse. Throat infections in babies aren't common, but they can happen. M just finished a 10 day course of antibiotics for tonsillitis. She had a fever for three days with it. Her pedi was surprised when he looked in her throat.

  • I had it 5-6 times as a kid because my dumb ass mother wouldn't take me to get my tonsils out and the infection basically stayed in them on going. I would keep out at least a couple of days to ensure they have wiped everything down. I remember having to take baths to speed along the rash showing up? Something about the heat? I can't remember.

  • I had bad strep that turned into scarlet fever. My mother had it as an infant and doctors thought that was pretty rare. We may have to get @KateRN08 on this one. But if it were me I'd keep LO out for a few days to see if any other kids report symptoms.
