STMs Change tables?

For those who have past experience/opinions.... Do you prefer the traditional open style shelves for a change table or the new dresser style. I like that dressers hide all the mess but obviously it isn't as accessible.. Alternatively are there those that found other options better? (Change pads etc). We already have most of our other furniture but still need a change table.
Thanks

Re: STMs Change tables?

  • We didn't have one for dd at all. We had the dresser style with ds. I didn't use it nearly as often as I had hoped. It was much easier just to throw down something on the couch or floor for a quick change.

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

  • I had the open style shelves and just put 4 wicker baskets on the shelves to store stuff.  Doesn't really matter though.  What DID matter though, I would strongly recommend not getting a changing table that has the vertical slats around the baby.  DD would always get her feet and hands stuck between the slats!  So this time I'm looking for one that has solid wood sides like this one... https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2543588&cp=&parentPage=search

As for the changing pad I would just make sure you get one that has contoured sides (the sides are taller than where the baby is laying) and that it has a strap, although I think they all have that, I don't know.

  • I am hoping to just have a changing pad in the bathroom. I want a sink near by :p
  • We just threw a changing pad on top of a regular sized dresser along with a diaper/wipe organizer thing. We actually still use it for about 90% of DS's diaper changes.

  • We had a changing pad on a dresser then had an organizer basket to hold diapers and wipes.  Most of the time though we just throw a towel down on the floor and change them there.

We also just put a changing pad on top of a dresser, and I think I used it twice. We did all diaper changes on our bed, couch or floor.

Same here. With DD we used the changing table some in the first month or 2. I can't recall every putting DS on the changing table.

  • It's funny how different everyone's experiences are. We have a changing pad on DS's dresser and I still use it. He's 2 1/2.

    This for us too.

  • I liked that we could get to our change table from the 'business' end - changing from the side is SO awkward for me. Ours had open sides and a pad that fit in it perfectly - will use for that for #2 as well
  • We had a changing table with the open shelves. I used it for almost every change. The only thing I didn't like about it was how quickly he outgrew it. He started to be push on it with his feet until his head would hit the top. But we will definitely be using it again for this one. I love love love the extra, easy access storage.

  • We use the changing table with open sides and have little containers for diapers and stuff on them so it's kinda organized. Her closet has an organizational system (if that's even a word) so we don't even have a real dresser. I like it b/c it's at the perfect height for changing her. We always change her there.

  • We bought a lifetime set of furniture (that they can use from birth to college, I hope) and with it came a traditional dresser with a hutch. We just used that and took the lower shelf off of the hutch so that he wouldn't hit his head. After diapers, we will put the other shelf back in. 2 birds, one stone.

  • In ODS's nursery, we went with a dark cherry crib and bought a 3-drawer dresser from PBK that was the same color and attached the changing pad to the top. In YDS's nursery, we went with a white crib and borrowed a white changing table with open shelves from SIL. I did not really have a preference as far as functionality but we are probably going to use the cherry set for the new baby. The changing table is a bit big and the baby's room (currently YDS's room) is small-ish.

I know many say it's "optional" but at 2am I'm not getting on the floor to change DD. I guess if I had a dresser already I would just put a pad on top of that (that's what we'll do in DDs room once LO is here since changing table will be in nursery)

I think it depends your set up too, we are in one floor small house so going to her room to change her is no biggy and we do 100% changes there. If I was in 2 floor house I'm sure I'd do more day time changes on downstairs floor.

I have open shelves on ours, I like it but now that DD is older she often pulls it all off. Honestly I think both are fine, you just put diapers and all the time used things in top drawer and extras/stash in bottoms. Open are cheaper...

  • Just have a couple of changing pads/ mats, I never bought a changing table and tbh how often are you in that room changing the baby's nappy anyway?

I live in a three storey house and I kept pads and nappies etc on each level so that no matter where we were in the house there was supplies on that floor. I'd definitely suggest that you get more than one changing mat because when the pad gets dirty as it often does you can simply put the baby on a clean pad and clean the dirty pad after you have finished changing baby's nappy.
  • By the way DD is almost 10 months and I change her on my knee these days, she's an easy baby to deal with and I just find this much easier than putting her on top of something but when the new baby comes I will be getting new pads
  • I like the idea of a corner change table because you can work on the working end and have space on either side for stuff. My SIL swears by hers.
  • Upstairs we used a dresser with organized basket on top. Over supplies went inside the dresser so it is never too messy and always looks neat and orderly.

Downstairs we used the pack n play changing area, or the floor. The pack n play ended up being a complete waste for us (outside of the changing table), so I'm not even sure I'm going to bring it down from the attic this time. I'm considering buying a cheap open changing table to save space, or just use a blanket on the floor instead.

  • We have the jenny Lind one and still use it. However, we use cloth so it's easier to bring him upstairs instead of bringing his diaper up there after we change him. Open or drawers, my child would still be in there ripping everything out. We have open because it was cheap, and holds a ton of stuff. He's also a little tornado and the table prevents him from getting away during a change.
  • We used the changing table for ds1 for a few months, but I don't know if I've ever used it for ds2. I mostly change him on the floor

  • We have one on a dresser. We use it for every change, but we also use cloth which works better in one spot, at least for us.

Pretty much our story exactly. I can't imagine not having a table of some sort.

  • Downstairs we used the PnP. In DS's room I just had a changing pad on the dresser. This time around, not sure...depends on the furniture we get but I am leaning towards the drawer/dresser style again vs. the open underneath

  • We have a dresser style changing table with one shelf and then three drawers. We cloth diaper, so I have one wicker basked on the shelf for the prefold diapers and another one for all of the cloth wipes. On the rest of the shelf, we have have the lotions, creams, nail clippers, etc. In the top drawer we keep all of his pocket diapers and covers. The bottom two drawers hold his clothes.

I use the changing table for all of his diaper changes. I tried the floor or couch when I didn't feel like walking up the stairs, but I hated it. It hurt my back to bend over. The changing table is the perfect height to stand.

  • We have a changing pad on top of the dresser. I kept a basket with diapers and the wipes on top.
  • I'll be painting my old desk and putting a changing pad on that. I'm just worried it might be a little short for SO, I don't have to bend over much but I'm not so tall! If our bathroom was bigger, I'd put a standard changing table in it instead
  • We did the changing pad on a dresser and we still use it for most of her changes. We also use cloth which as a pp said might make a difference. We just don't want diapers left in random buckets all over the house, so we take her up to where her pail is.

When she was littl we did have her pnp downstairs. it had a changer on it that we used for the first couple months when she was still pooping ten times a day and I couldn't do the stairs ten times a day.

  • We have a long dresser from Ikea and threw a changing pad on top with some baskets for diapers and necessities. I also use the changing pad because if I ever change him on the floor he tries to turn over and take off. The changing pad is like magic and he knows to stay put.

  • We have the open style and we like it. I like the accessibilty of everything. Ours wasn't too expensive (around $80, I think) considering it has already served us for over 4 years and will last until this baby is done with diapers.

I use it for every change. We use disposable and have a smaller ranch, so going into the nursery for every change is no big deal. We have a contoured changing pad on top and own many changing pad covers.
  • We have an open sided one from Ikea that was pretty affordable.  We CD and organize with baskets.  I love having a changing table.  I still use it for every change with my 18 month old.  He holds still on the changing table, but rolls like crazy if I attempt to change him anywhere else.

  • We just use a changing pad on top of her dresser and use one of the top drawers to hold supplies. I also have an organizer on top that holds her personal care items. All of DD's changes happen upstairs in her room so there is nothing on the first floor.

LO in July will have a similar set-up.
