Hi. As many of you know RSV is going around this year very strong. Our DD was has been sick for a little over a week now. It started as a fever for a few days and then developed into cold like symptoms then a bad cough. I took her to the Ped twice for the fever but she didn't have any other symptoms at the time. Then on Christmas Eve into Christmas it got so much worse so first thing the next morning I rushed her back to the Ped who did a nebulizer treatment and sent me straight to ER.
Once here they ran a culture and diagnosed her with Adenovirus and RSV. A chest X-ray also showed some pneumonia bruying. We were admitted a few hours later and have been here for a little over 24 hours now.
DD is doing better but they want to monitor her breathing a little more (wheezing has stopped, thankfully) but she's still breathing a bit hard. She's also not eating well at all. She is however in good spirits and coughing less. They are monitoring the progress of the culture as well to see if it's developing it staying as is.
I write this just as a Motherly warning to not ignore the signs as all the Peds in the hospital have told me that it's so bad this year and quickly progressing into differnt virus and some even pneumonia like our DD. Wishing all your Babies health. Please keep our DD in your prayers for a speedy recovery and a release home soon.
Update: We were discharged a couple of hours ago, thank God! While she's still pretty congested, her lungs sound much better. She is also eating again, not a lot but enough to keep her hydrated. We were told the cough can linger for up to a month but that overall we should see improvement every few days. They sent us home with a nebulizer and script for the albuterol. She also has to take antibiotics for 5 more days. Please keep her in your T&P so that she is able to continue recovering here at home and we don't have to take her back.
Thank you Ladies. The Ped just stopped by the room, looks lik we'll be staying the night again since she's not eating. She will be going back on the IV tonight. I'm comforted by her smile and playful ways as I know she must be feeling at least ok if she's playing
This post has me really worried. I just posted on Christmas about my LO being super sick. He's really congested and mucousy and has developed a deep sounding cough. He also has a weird wheezing sound that he makes some times. My DH took him to the pedi yesterday and they said that it's just an upper respertory thing that will go away on its own. However, he ses even worse today so I'm not sure if I trust that :-(
Def watch the rattled breathing. We found out DS had an issue at his 6 month appt & he still needs an occasional breathing treatment. The scary thing is was he was happy and didn't have a fever. He's not eating well so I may take him back.

I'm mostly a lurker but I hope your LO gets better soon. Lots of T&Ps for u guys. I just had to deal with this and It was so hard for us. Good luck and I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.
@kelseyhh don't worry yourself too much but it is better to be safe than sorry. See if your Ped will do a culture, if not the hospital will. They did DD with a nose swab and that revealed what viruses she had. The chest X-ray they did because of how her lungs sounded and the fact that she was breathing so hard. RSV is an upper respitory infection and all babies deal differently but again best to catch it early so nothing else develops. T&P for your LO.
@CNJ4EVA, thank you. It's crazy because the morning I took DD to the Peds (3rd time), there was another baby in the room next door getting a treatment. Then another one came in after and also needed a treatment. When we got to he ER they said they had been getting babies all morning with the same symptoms. The bad news is RSV affects something like 70% of babies in their first year. The good news is a lot of babies are able to fight it off as a cold before the cough sets in.
My baby also has RSV, bronchiolitis and a double ear infection. We have the albuterol, amox and ear numbing drops. Let's just say we've had a rough week too and agree with all you've said about it being so bad. I hate seeing our babies so sick. I hope your LO feels better soon!
Keeping your baby in my prayers! I work at a children's hospital in a non patient care role but I work a lot with our doctors and we recently did a big media push about RSV because we are at epidemic levels in Texas. It's scary and most people don't realize how serious it can be. We've been avoiding really crowded places like the mall out of sheer paranoia.
@TheyCalledHerKate, wow epidemic levels? Ugh, can't say I'm surprised though because it's pretty bad here in NJ as well. I'm just so upset that DDs turned into pneumonia. So glad we caught it in time. Avoiding crowded places is a very good idea for now.
