Tips for building up milk supply?

I've been a little MIA lately. Breastfeeding has been the absolute hardest thing for me. I knew it would be hard, but this is just ridiculous. I've been depressed and anxious about it.

My milk came in early and was amazing. I was overflowing. I couldn't go more than a few hours without feeding/pumping. This eventually led to a very nasty bout of mastitis in both breasts. After that cleared, I developed clogged ducts which were extremely painful. All of these things led to decreased production. It was down to almost nothing.

Now I'm finally off antibiotics and milk seems to be coming back a bit. I'm sling fenugreek, drinking Mother's Milk tea, upping calories, pumping with a hospital grade pump after feedings... you name it. Have any of you had experience with this and know what to do to increase your supply? I'm supplementing with formula, but would love to go back to EBF, if I ever can.

  • You can try red raspberry leaf pills, those help supply

The only way to know for sure if your supply is low is to weigh your baby, breastfeed your baby, then weigh again so you know how many ounces they took in.  If your supply is really low, I'd talk to a lactation consultant and get their advice for how to increase it.  The Kellymom article above should cover all the bases though... Sorry you dealt with mastitis and clogged ducts.
  • @hercules03 she was definitely having wet diapers, but she was very in distress while she was BFing. At the beginning, she'd nurse happily and quietly, then she'd get very disgruntled after just a few minutes. When I pump, I only get about .5-1 oz out at a time. I know baby is better at getting the milk out than the pump, but she'd eat for almost an hour and still be starving shortly after. She would cry all day. As soon as I started giving her formula, she started sleeping so much better.

She was likely going through a growth spurt and nursing often to signal your body to make more milk. If baby is gaining well, I'd cut the formula and only breastfeed to build your supply. Some women aren't able to let down well for a pump, so pumping isn't a good indicator of how much milk you make. Good luck!
