Holy heartburn?

I'm 35 weeks pregnant and have avoided any heartburn so far. I am sick and starting to finally feel better. Now today, I have indigestion and burning and a terrible taste in my mouth. I feel like I'm going to throw up and my chest is killing me! Is this really what heartburn is like? I took a couple Tums and that hasn't helped. Any suggestions? Please!!

Re: Holy heartburn?

  • Wish I had a solution, I'm up every night with this problem! So far I'm just popping rolaids and drinking milk like crazy.

  • Papaya enzymes when you eat. Vanilla ice cream. Sit up as much as you can even while you sleep.
  • The ONLY thing that has helped me is taking OTC Prilosec. My doc didn't approve initially, but when I tried other meds to no avail, he ok'ed Prilosec. I take it each morning before breakfast and it has helped tremendously!
  • Zantac 150 saved my life several times this pregnancy. Especially last night when I was having so much chest pain that I honestly thought I was having a heart attack. Zantac + Tums + Greek yogurt usually works for me.

  • My doc approved Zantac. If I take it in the morning and before bed, it is under control somewhat with a few tums chasers here and there... If I don't take the Zantac I will get horrific heartburn and I will vomit. Good times.
  • I take zantac

  • I have had that pretty much the whole time. I can't roll over in bed without being sick. I take Losec (omeperzole sp?) 2-3 times per day, 20mg. Approved by my GP, midwife and ER dr when I was being treated for HG. It is a cat c drug though, but I need it. I also live on gaviscon, drink it before and after every meal.
Avoid big meals, especially after lunch/afternoon, or you will never sleep.
  • I've had it a few times really bad and believe it or not, almond milk was the only thing that helped it go away. Hope you feel better soon I know how painful that can be!

  • Nothing helped me, except lemon juice in water first thing in the morning and intermittently throughout the day. All the things the doctor prescribed didn't help at all. Lemon is alkalising, which balances out the acid. Also milk and dairy are acidic so may not help but rather make it worse. Also bicarbonate of soda in the middle of an attack helps immensely!!
  • Tums chewy delights go to work super fast for me! I eat them like candy though, because the results don't seem to last longer than a couple of hours.

  • Tums, sleeping/sitting up and lots and lots and LOTS of water helped me. GL!

  • Zantac 150mg twice a day, plus 2 Tums several times a day. It is truly awful.

  • I take tums and have to sleep propped up to almost sitting with lots of pillows. The pillows help me more than anything else.

  • Pepcid!! My Dr. Said it was fine to take 2 weeks ago...it's been a magical 2 weeks. I was popping TUMS like it was candy with no real relief.

  • Zantac for me. Tums never did much and my OB wants me to avoid them due to suspected kidney issues/pain.

Also watch for food triggers... Sadly, Greek yogurt GIVES me heartburn. I love it so it sucks, but it is what it is for now. Chocolate is a big trigger for me too, and tomato soup (oddly tomato pasta sauce is fine?!)

  • Tums during the day, Mylanta before bed and any time I wake up during the night. Sleeping propped up is #1 preventative even though I find it hella uncomfortable.

  • Don't lay down on a full stomach. Avoid greasy and cheesy foods. Don't overeat. I don't know why but getting in the shower helps me and walking around too.
  • Maalox. I can't take Tums because my history of kidney stones. I'm on Pepcid twice a day as well. The maalox is just for those moments when the meds aren't working.

This. Are you stones calcium oxalate? I couldn't take tums either for this reason.

  • I just keep taking the tums until the heartburn goes away. Also, propping myself up with a few pillows at night helps keep it at bay when going to sleep.
  • omeprozole 2x daily with tums throughout the day as needed.  Sleeping sitting up to avoid the waking up vomiting fun.  Eat dinner as early as possible to give yourself as much time to digest as you can and never over-eating or eating you specific trigger foods which will make everything worse.

  • Just started taking pepcid complete and it works really well for me. I was taking a lot of tums but that just caused other problems. Baking soda works but use it sparingly as it is salt.
