Pacifiers

Who here has given a pacifier to their LO's? What kind did you use that didn't cause nipple confusion? How old was LO when you started giving them the pacifier? How often do you give it to them?
Sorry for so many questions, but I would be very grateful for any responses

Re: Pacifiers

  • I have given my 17 day old the gumdrop style (although the kind in the store seem bigger than the kind L&D gave me and she will only take the smaller one) and the soothie.  She started trying them around 4-5 days old.

She will take both but rarely uses them.  She prefers my boobs.

We use soothie and I gave it to him at 2 days old. No nipple confusion and he breast feeds great.

Edit: we give it to him if he's fussy and doesn't want the boob or if it's time for bed/nap.
  • We use the Mam ones.  We started at 3 days old.  I waited til my milk was in so he would know the difference between the two.

I gave DS2 the Mam 0+ pacifier at 11 days old. I give it during his witching hour after he has been fed. He has no nipple confusion.

ETA: We tried the gumdrop first and he would not take it.
  • The NICU occupational therapists used Soothies to teach her the suck, swallow, breathe reflex. We used them once we brought her home but found that she loves the Dr. Browns pacifiers. She will keep the Dr. Browns pacifiers in her mouth but she struggled with the Soothies.
  • We started with the soothie in the hospital but switched to the mam ones and he prefers the mam bc they smaller and fit his lil face, no nipple confusion on either
  • I'm giving her the MAM 0+ and I think she was 3 or 4 days old when we started. No nipple confusion she's been nursing just fine.

  • Thanks everyone. We have the soothies and mam's here so I guess I will just try them out and see how he does. He is 10 days old and I was just worried that I would be starting them too early into breast feeding. Sounds like everyone is having good luck doing both tho which is great to hear.

  • We give LO the nuk and started around 2 weeks old. We tried tommy tippy ones prior to that and LO hated them.

  • We have three different kinds. He likes them all a little, but he's not a huge paci kid. None of them have caused nipple confusion.
  • He started using them when he came home from the hospital at 4 days old.
  • We started both kids on the gumdrop in the hospital. Neither had any nipple confusion issues.

Started LO on them when she was 3 days old, because she tends to comfort suck and my boobs couldn't take it. We use Mam pacifiers and I usually offer them after a feeding if she seems to want to suck still (and I know she is full), as well as at bedtime.

  • Gumdrop given during week one with no nipple confusion.
  • In the hospital they gave LO the gumdrop like pacifier. I was quite taken aback because they didn't even ask me first and I was nervous about nipple confusion. Then she had to have photo therapy for jaundice and it was the only soothing she could have so I let her continue using it. She doesn't have nipple confusion luckily. She doesn't take it all the time and we only offer it when she's very fussy.
  • We've tried with the soothies from week 2 but it's kind of hit and miss. Sometimes she'll take it but usually she won't. We rarely offer it though since she seems happy without it.

  • We tried the soothies, they won't stay in her mouth though. They sort of pop out.

Try it with the little animal on the end. They are called wubbanub. They seem to stay in LO's mouth better.
  • DD has latch issues. We gave her a Mam and she loved it but definitely regressed on her latch and I'm still fighting that a couple days later. DS took a paci day 2 and never had a problem, but we're going to hold off another week or 2 to give DD another one.

  • I tried the tommy tippy, gum drop and nuk and LO wouldn't take them. Gave her a mam and she took to it instantly. Think I gave it to her around day five and she has had no nipple confusion. She has taken bottle feeds as well and is still nursing fine
  • We have used Wubbanub which has a smoothie nipple, have been using it since day 3. I give it to home when ever he's fussy and I don't think he's hungry. There's no nipple confusion.
