sitting

I know that as a FTM, we are always worried about our LO's development. I was just curious as to how many babies are not fully sitting on their own. My son will sit brief periods of time unsupported and must be supervised throughout. I have to place him in the sitting position, he cannot get there himself. He just started doing push ups during tummy time which I know is a little late. I know I should not compare and everyone develops at their own pace, I just wanted to make sure I am not alone.

  • My LO is pretty much the same as yours The past few days he has started getting on all fours and rocking. If he is on a blanket he will pull his self to wear he wants to go. I have to sit him up and stay with him or he will face plant the floor after a minute. He has started to finally doing the triangle sit.

  • My DD is exactly like ur lo. Her mini push ups just started recently she sits unsupported for a few seconds if I sit her up. I'd say don't worry about it.

  • My LO is 6.5 months and just barely sits, I have to put her in that position though. She only supermans on her belly.

  • We're in the same boat as you. I wouldn't worry unless he gets to 9months and is still having problems.

Why? Just for reassurance? That's still within the normal range at this age.
  • Our LO is getting better at it by the day. He still face plants more than I would like, so we don't let him do it unless we are there to catch him. He has a 90th percentile head, and I swear it weighs him down when he leans over! ;)

  • Yea, I agree...this makes me feel that you think my son is way behind. Went for his six month appointment two weeks ago and he did even less then and they weren't concerned. Just wanted to see how other LO's were doing since I was told my son has mild hypotonia at his four month appointment which would cause him to be delayed but the doc said he has already improved greatly. I didn't notice a delay though at that time because he rolled at 3 1/2 months....
  • DS is almost 7 months, and can sit, but not that well. He certainly can't sit unsupervised, or get himself into a sitting position. He tends to get excited and fling backwards, or fold in half. I didn't think of it as a problem, until now I mean.

  • O can sit for long periods of time, but i have to put him in that position. He will sometimes fall over, so he only sits on carpet for now.

Its pretty normal at this age for them tonot put themselves into a sitting position. That typically comes after crawling, I'd say around the 8 month mark or so.

Your LO is fine. All babies develop differently. No need to call the pedi. :-)

  • Meh, I wouldn't call the pedi over it.  Q just got the full swing of sitting unassisted in the last couple weeks.  He most definitely can't get into a sitting position by himself.  That's a milestone for closer to a year (8-12ish months) and even sitting unassisted runs a range up to about 7ish months I think and that's just an average :)  Yours is totally getting there so I wouldn't worry at all.

Q does not roll.  He's done belly to back a few times and never back to belly.  I did ask the doctor about it and said that because he was sitting, I thought his core was good and he just didn't have the motivation :-p  She said that at this stage they look for them to be making progress in getting themselves toward something - rolling, sitting/reaching, scooting, pulling up, crawling and that as long as he was showing signs of trying some of those, he's probably good.

  • Dd didn't get herself into the sitting position until probably in the 8-10 month range. That's actually a little difficult to learn, so I wouldn't worry. Mine is the same as yours!
  • DS2 just turned 6 months and he is nowhere near sitting unsupported. He sits well with me holding his back but otherwise he immediately falls forward.
  • My LO is 7 months and only sits unsupported for a few seconds. Then he either folds in half or he topple over to a side. I'm not worried though, he will get there eventually. He just likes to take his time. He has just started rolling from back to belly in the last week or so, and he can't usually roll back. At his 6 month appt the pedi wasn't worried though. I think your LO is probably just fine. :)

  • I can put my lo in a sitting position and she will stay for a short amount of time but she cant put herself in that position yet
  • LO can sit by herself for a few minutes. After that, I put a hoppy around her so she sits awhile longer. She can't get to a seated position and hates tummy time. Just hoping that eventually she'll get there and catch up

  • My LO is sitting fairly well by himself. He'll still fall over if he gets too excited, so we supervise and keep something soft around him to fall onto. He can't get himself into a sitting position, and he really doesn't roll. He's done belly to back a few times between 4 and 5 months. He hasn't rolled in awhile now though. He also has never rolled back to belly. At our 6-month appointment last week, pedi just said to do more belly time.

Because every baby is different and I think some advice you don't seek the advice of strangers. Filtered enough for ya but this is the internet and I can say pretty much whatever I want right?

She didn't ask for advice; she asked how many babies were sitting.

C *started* sitting at 5 months, and by 6 months she could sit for 10 mins without plopping over. My friend has a 8 month old and she just started sitting a few weeks ago, and a week after that started crawling. Every baby is different.

Edit: She still flies back and bops her head. So she's not totally comfortable with it yet.
