Travel Update!

Our trip went really well!  We left at 5:00 on Friday when we picked up DD from daycare.  At 6:15, we stopped for dinner at Panera and got DD into her overnight diaper and PJs.  Then in the car at 7:00, she had her bottle and books, then I put the blanket over the seats, turned on her white noise, and said good night.  She took a bit to fall asleep and was a fitful sleeper but she did sleep until we were about 20 minutes from our destination.  Then she had a coughing fit (she has been sick) and I went in the back to give her some water.  After that, she had a bit of an "I-hate-my-car-seat-and-want-out-now" fit, but when I told her she could go sleep in a crib in a few minutes, she settled down.

In the hotel room, there was a little "hallway" with the sink that led to the actual bathroom with the tub and toilet, so we put her PNP in that area and hung the room darkening curtain (I brought hers from home!) across the opening with a little masking tape.  DD laid on our bed while we did this and she was excited to see her PNP and blankets.  We put her in there (it was like 11:30 PM at that point) and she went back to sleep in probably 15 minutes.  It was great!

She slept WAY in the next morning and we let her because we are nice.  She napped really well at DH's grandparents' house - we tossed her room darkening curtains over the existing curtain rods in their guest room, set up her PNP, and did nap time just like at home.  She napped for 2.5 hours!  She slept like a charm on Saturday night in the hotel room and took a good car nap today (with the darkening blanket and white noise, of course!)

So, I am no longer afraid to travel with a kid.  :o)  I am a person who hates to be frazzled and prefers to stay relaxed and on-routine, and I'm glad to see that with a bit of work and planning, we can do that just fine.  If anyone is planning a trip with a kid who likes darkness and her own space to sleep, I highly recommend packing room darkening fabric along with masking tape and clothespins for quick rig-ups.  It was perfect!
