DH taking leave too?

Any other daddies taking time off work when baby arrives? DH is going to look into his options this week. I'd love to have time off together at first but I would also love to stack our leaves so baby could stay home for thd first half of baby's first year, but I'm thinking it can't work that way. Hmmm,.. anyone else looking to do something along these lines?

Re: DH taking leave too?

  • My husband is taking leave when I have the baby. He gets 2 weeks paid and he's saving his vacation time. I don't work and I'll have to have a C-Section so I am welcoming any and all help!

  • DH is planning on taking 4 or 5 days. I live less than a mile from my parents so unless something is wrong I don't see him burning through 3 weeks vacation right away and having none left for the rest of the year.

  • My husband gets 40 vacation days annually (he's been with his company for 12 years). The last time, he took 2 weeks off, and then worked every other day for the next month. So I had his help. I'm not sure what his plan is for this coming baby. He doesn't have formal paternity leave.

  • Dh took 2 weeks with dd, he will probably take about the same this time, I think last time we were just lazy and adjusting for 2 weeks, this time I'll need help with dd while caring for a newborn, I feel like I need him more this time.

  • With DD, DH took a couple days after she was born, but decided to save days for the few weeks his family and then mine visited. He took a week after they had all gone home.

  • last time DH took a couple of weeks off. I'm not sure they do a delayed paternity/maternity  leave. While that would be awesome, to have a parent there stretched out for a year, you'll probably want a bit of help those first few weeks. There is little sleep and it's nice to have someone handle some of the night stuff so you can catch up. I know I was an idiot and pushed it more then I should have after my C section, but it took pretty much a full 2 months to get back on my feet, rested and functional, and able to deal with NB/infant life.

  • DH gets 2 weeks paternity leave. And 4 weeks of vacation time each year. He's planning on taking his 2 weeks of paternity leave then maybe a week or 2 of his vacation time.

My husband gets 3 weeks a year of regular vacation. Just as we did last time, he'll save a  week to take the first week LO is born. It's nice to have a week together adjusting and relaxing together. Plus recovering it's nice having him around so I don't have to get up/down as much.

His  has to be Monday-Sunday so he'll really get a little extra if LO is born say a Wed he'll stay with me as long as I'm in hospital, maybe work like Sat/Sun then have a week off. Of course last time DD was born on a Monday lol so just exactly a week.

He doesn't have the option to stack all 3 even if we wanted to, but we probably wouldn't regardless.

  • DH gets 2 wks paternal leave but I'm sure he will want that for the beginning. Maybe we can split it up and do 1wk when baby born and 1 wk when I have to go back to work to keep baby home as long as possible. Great idea!
  • Last time dh took the first two weeks off with me . It was so nice having him around for that time. Now he's a sahd so he'll be home the whole time I'm off.

  • Here it's law that 1 parent can stay  home for up to a year and they have to give you your job back - that time can be split between parents, but with only 1 carer off work at a time

that didn't really work for us, dh just took a week off then I stayed home for a year, but I do have a friend who stayed home for 6 months with her ds and then her husband stayed home for a few months - it worked really well for them!

  • DH took a week vacation when DS was born and is doing the same with this one.

  • Last time, DH took the first week off to stay home. His office is less than 10 min from home, so he'd come home after that every day for lunch. I think technically he has 2 weeks, but they're really flexible (it's a small firm) so as long as his work is getting done, they don't care. He also travels some for work, so he got any traveling done he needed to a couple weeks before I was due and didn't start back for a couple months with that.
  • We have vacation time saved up. With DD he took a week. With DS it was barely a day of being home. I'm insisting on a week again this time. I need his help and he needs to bond with the baby. He had a hard time adjusting to a second kid and bonding with DS and I think the lack of time off really contributed.

  • DH is planning on taking at least 2wks off. In Rhode Island we have paternity leave through the Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) through the state. It works like Unemployment Insurance or Work Comp Insurance, 66% of gross pay. I'll be on TDI too so we just need to work out our missing wages and make sure we save during the next 6mos.

  • With DS, I took off 12 weeks and used all of my saved sick and personal days so 10 weeks were paid. DH was then able to then take FMLA after mine was done. I think he had 7 weeks paid from vacation saved up and then did 2 weeks unpaid. He was not allowed to use sick time or he could have taken the entire 12 weeks paid. I think with FMLA you can take your 12 weeks any time within a year. DS was 6 months when he started daycare.

This time, neither of us have as much sick/vacation time saved up so we won't get as much paid and time off will be shorter for us both. This baby will probably be around 4 months when he/she starts daycare.

  • Hoping for a couple of weeks vacation.
  • Not sure what he can legally take, but if all goes as planned, I will be having a RCS on a Wednesday and he will take Wed-Friday off work. He works from home a lot so I'm sure he will do that a lot too.
On a stupid note, his boss is a total misogynistic pig who thinks the 1950s, where dads weren't in the delivery room and weren't expected to have much interaction with their children, were the "good old days". He recently gave one of his co-workers a really hard time when his baby was born and he only took a week off. I will throw a fit if his boss does this to DH.

  • We aren't sure yet whether DW will get maternity leave...I'm hoping so, but we'll see. I do not think FMLA applies for her in this case. She gets three weeks of vacation a year though, so worst case we plan on her taking most of that after LO is born.

More and more since being on TB I am starting to feel like I should move to a different country!  This would be awesome!

  • My hubby gets 2 weeks paid paternity leave which seems like enough for us since I only work very part time and my mom teaches so she'll be here all Summer. I'm grateful for the 2 weeks.
  • My hubby gets 10 days paternity leave, plus he has some vacation time, but the current due date is 7/2 and he'll be going out on the boat again for a week or two starting on July 11th (he's in the Navy).  I'm really hoping the baby comes on time or a little early, but I know these things don't really happen how we want them to ;-)

  • DH owns his own company, so can be quite flexible.

We haven't talked about it much, but he will probably stay home with me for at least 1-2 weeks at first. He can always pop into the office if he needs to.

Long-term, he is planning to be at home with the baby 1 day/week, and I am hoping to be at home 1-2 days myself.

DH will take two weeks off just like he after the birth of our first two children. I will be having a RCS, so I need his help with the baby and with the other two. It's going to be crazy! All he has to do is tell his boss when he will be out. But he will definitely stay in touch with the office and maybe even do some light work in the evenings since his firm really takes a "team" approach to their cases.
  • My hubs is going to take a week off using some of his vacation days :)

  • No paternity leave here.  DH will take a week off.  He will work from home for a week, then he will go back to work. We are taking a week and a half trip though when this DC is only 5 weeks old.

  • SO will take one week paid, one week unpaid, and then maybe work a short week. This is busy season/overtime season for him and when we get to save a lot of money, so he can't miss too much. MIL lives a couple blocks away and my grandmom (who raised me) may stay with me for a week when he goes back. We'll lock it down as we get closer, though!
  • Hubby gets 3 weeks vacation. He'll take a week or two, depending on what they'll allow.
