Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Do you wake them from naps?

DS just turned one on Monday. And I've always wondered this but always forget to ask. He takes around 2, 2 hour naps a day. Wakes up around 8 and goes to bed around 9 normally. During the day he lays down for a a nap around 11 and sleeps till 1/130 then takes another nap around 430-6. And if he's not awake by 6 we wake him up. But during the day, do you wake him up if he sleeps for more than the normal amount of time? this might be a silly question but im just curious :)

Re: Do you wake them from naps?

  • Never wake a sleeping baby!!! I let her snooze as long as she wants to.

  • Almost never. Only when we have somewhere to be. If I wake him he is cranky the rest of the day and often sleeps horribly that night.

  • I will wake DD if she takes a late nap and is still sleeping at 6, but otherwise I just let her sleep.

  • Ds is 18 months and yes I do or he won't go to bed. At a year though I believe I didn't unless we had to go somewhere. I figured out that as a rule when he was about a year it didn't matter how long he slept really but how long he was awake.

For instance if he woke at 6 I put him down for a nap at 10: 4 hours awake. If he woke at 7 then nap at 11. Once he was awake again it'd be another 4 hours before he was ready to sleep again. At that time he'd sleep about an hour.

Now, he wakes at about 7 and naps at noon for two hours. Then bed at 7, making two 5 hour wake periods.
  • Oh my word, no. Never.

  • Not unless it's absolutely necessary...DD is not on a set sleep schedule, so if she's tired, I let her sleep.

  • My DS naps from around 12:30-3:30. Sometimes he'll snooze until 4 or longer, and then I will wake him up because we will have a hard time putting him down for bedtime.

  • We generally only wake DS when we absolutely need to go somewhere.

  • Like others said, generally, NO. Unless we have to go somewhere, or if his afternoon nap gets past 4:45 or so. He goes to bed around 8:15p and waking up later from his 2nd nap would interfere w/his bedtime.

  • No, unless we have to go somewhere. And I'll wake DS at 6:00 pm. if he is taking a late nap.
  • Not usually... My DD goes down for a nap at 1:00 and sleeps usually two or three hours depending on how much she needs.  If we have to go somewhere or if she went down for nap late, we wake her up by 6:00.
  • thanks ladies, this is what i thought. i dont wake him up unless i have too, and even then he's not normally cranky so thats a bonus. Thanks for all the answers :)

  • Yes, I do all the time. He has a really weird sleep schedule...he sleeps 11-12 hours at night, wakes up around 6:30am and is ready for a nap by 10-10:30. I wake him after 2.5 hours (so by 1pm), or else he won't be ready for bed by 7pm. I like an earlier bed time since his sister doesn't nap and goes to bed early too. If I don't wake him, he'll easily sleep 3-4 hours but then will be up until 9 or 10.

When he was around a year I didn't wake him, but I noticed in the past few months that really long naps were starting to interfere with bed time and nighttime sleep.

  • Dear lord in heaven absolutely not.  If my kid sleeps, then I let her sleep.  And God help the person that DOES wake her up.  My kid sucks at naps though, so there's that.

  • OH HELL YES is my answer, but let me explain.  My 22 month old will easily nap for 2-3 hours if you let her but if this nap occurs oh pretty much any time after 11 am we're SCREWED at night and she won't go to bed till 10 pm or later.

I used to let her nap from 1-3 pm or 2-4 and I was just tired of fighting with her at night, so I do wake her after about an hour. A perfect day she will just take a small 30 min. nap.  When I go wake her up she jumps right up and wakes up easily and happily so it's fine for us.  Then we can attempt to put her down around 8 pm.

The 3 yr old is a different story, I don't mind if she naps an hour or 2 because she doesn't do it everyday and she can still go to sleep by 9 or so.  If she doesn't nap at all she's in bed by 7 or 8.  She also loves her sleep and hates being woken up.
