DS pretty much always slept on a twin-sized mattress on the floor. That way I could lay with him to fall asleep, and it made nursing really easy during the nights. Now that I'm PG again, I've started falling asleep with him again, and it's really sweet. (I know that's not how lots of folks do it, but it's worked great for us.)
The first mattress was only 4" high, and at about 1.5, he got a regular mattress/boxspring, but they are still on the floor.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind."

She decided around 1 1/2 that she was done with the crib, she was throwing crazy tantrums that weren't like her when we put her in the crib. First was at nap and I was finally able to get her to sleep, but at night she was crazy again. I put her on the queen bed in the guest room for a few minutes while I went to the bathroom and to get her some water, when I came back she was sound asleep.
So we transitioned her crib into the toddler bed the next morning and a few months later we were given twin beds so she transitioned to those.
DD and DS share a room so I haven't moved him into one yet but OMG he wants to be in one. Our bedrooms are at the top of the stairs and DD gets up to go to the bathroom. I guess we just need to put the gate at the top of the stairs but they can both push the gate open so we've got to mount it in such a way that cannot happen. He can walk down the stairs but I don't want him going down without me at least being aware. He's too mischievous and sometimes takes big risks.
We went straight from a crib to a full bed at 2 years and 2 months.
It was a bit early, but I needed the bed out of the other room to make way for new baby and I also wanted the crib transition done, over and forgotten about long before the new baby appeared.
It was really NBD in the end. My kid didn't care all that much. One night of in and out and she was just fine.
DD has been in a converted crib for about two months and last night was her first night in her new twin bed. She's doing great. She will be 23 months next week.
We are going to transition DD next month when she turns 3. She doesn't climb out so I saw no reason to do it sooner. Her crib becomes a toddler bed so I'm just going to toddler bed for awhile.
My son is 2 1/2 and I haven't even thought of moving him out of the crib. Technically, he can climb out but hasn't done it yet.
For those who moved their kids, what was the reason? I am wondering if anyone moved their child for reasons other than a new sibling needing the crib or because the child could climb out.

same with us. son is 25 months and we've talked about doing it at some unspecified point in the future, but don't see a good reason.
@sugarbear0524 We moved to a new house and didn't want to set up the crib. He is in a twin bed with a trundle bed on it. He used to use the trundle as a step and also pulled it out in case he rolled out of bed. Now the trundle stays pushed in and we have a step stool by his bed.
DS is almost 27 months and still in the crib. We have a big boy bed all set up, but he is clearly not ready (we did try on two separate occasions and it didn't go well-- I don't see the point in forcing it).
He climbed out once and scared himself. Never tried again. That was months ago. He is happy in the crib.
Re: BIG KID BED???
DS went to a toddler bed at 18 months. He just turned two and is still in his toddler bed.
