STM+ Sunday Survey

Sooo I thought it might be a good idea to have a thread where any of us FTM can ask STM+ questions. I am sure a lot of us wonder the same things or there may be things we don't think about that others wonder that would be helpful to know. This doesn't have to be every Sunday, but it is fun to have a catchy name :) So post any burning questions you may have!

  • I did ask some gals in chat already, but it'd be good to have in writing for a reference...

    1. When is a good time to start a registry?
    2. What are things you do not need to register for?

  • You don't need to register for clothes or burp cloths. Those are the typical gifts from people who don;t know what to get you. I would only register for them if you are going after the completion discount, but doubt you would need it for that.

Some things, like bottles, are hard to register for as you don't know what your LO will like/hate.

Most showers happen around 30ish weeks, so your registry should be done by about 25 or so, or whenever the invitations go out.
  • I admit I am already guilty of buying some clothes but I couldn't resist once I found out what we are having! I haven't continued to buy though..just had to get it out of my system. :) Every baby shower I have been to had a lot of clothes given to the new mom so I definitely won't be registering for any! Thanks ladies!

  • Great idea for a thread! I don't have any advice this time but will def keep watch for it. I would've LOVED something like this when I was a FTM!

  • Ohhh @Danielle4348 that makes me think of another question...what baby clothes brand seems to be the best quality and mostly true to size? (Knowing of course all babies grow differently)

Carter's is always true to size for DS, who is tall and lean. Anything from Kohls, I believe the brand is Jelly Bean or something, shrinks right up so we always size up from there.
Baby Gap and Old Navy are also true to size for my son, though sweaters from Gap run big on him.

  • 1. When is a good time to start a registry? I start my registry in 2nd tri, more to keep track of what I am looking at than anything else.  And then I just tweak it for months :-).
    2. What are things you do not need to register for? Clothes, blankets (unless you want a specific type of swaddler or something- no need to register for those fluffy soft blankets), toys (again, unless you want something very specific like Sophie the Giraffe).
    3. What baby clothes brand seems to be the best quality and mostly true to size? (Knowing of course all babies grow differently): I really think that is a personal preference.  I LOVE Carters pi's, but I feel like their clothes are kind of inconsistent in sizing.  Gap is pretty TTS, but can get costly; I depend on hand-me-downs for Gap clothes :-).  I love pants and dresses from H&M, but they typically run a size big.  My favorite brand is Next (nextdirect.com), but they also run about a size big (I find that most European clothes do, even when converted to American sizes).

  • Oh yay I like this thread, good idea mommyp! I don't have any questions I can think of right now, but I love reading the responses. Thanks STMs!

  • I agree with most of the other posters- right after your anatomy scan is a good time to register.  Don't register for clothes or bottles or baby blankets- you'll tend to get a ton anyway (bottles are just something you only need a few of to start with until you know what brand works for your baby, so it doesn't make sense to register for a whole slew of them- maybe a 4 piece set or something).

As far as clothes, Carters' and Old Navy are my favorite- they always seem true to size.  Target brand (Circo) run very very small (DD fits 2T and occasionally 3T in clothes right now but she is almost too big for 4T in Circo clothes).

  • Skip the Gerber onesies, too. Stick to Carter's. Size, fit, and quality are much better. Skip the Bjorn. They are extremely uncomfortable and expensive. Look into ergo or becco if you want that type of carrier. I recommend skipping the big travel system. Yeah, you get a car seat and stroller, but they tend to be bulky and heavy. There are so many options out there now. I recommend a snap n go and then an umbrella or citi mini, etc, for post infant car seat needs. You can find a lot of these on CL. Skip clothes, like pp. Clothes are a tough issue here. My dd is a stick and cannot wear certain brands, at all, like Gymboree. The butt area is huge end the tops are too boxy. Don't invest too much in one brand until you see how your kiddo fits in them. Ds can wear Gymboree no problem, though. He is solid.

  • Yay!!! Love this thread!

    STM's:
If given a choice, what would you wear immediately after labor?

Anything you wish you would have done during your pregnancy that you didn't get around to do?

What are 1-2 conversations to have with hubby before baby arrives?

  • Wear after delivery: comfy pjs, yoga pants and nursing tanks. With DS1 I wore a nightgown days 1 and 2 then just wanted comfy bottoms (csection so I was there 5 days);

To do when pregnant: eat sensible ( I gained a ton of weight) and to take pictures (totally agree with @LoHerrim)

Conversations with DH: can't think of any really. I know it's not a conversation but I did make sure to have one last "date" before becoming parents. That was really good for us because so much was about baby that we needed to regroup.

  • After delivery I slept in the hospital gowns because they were easy and it didn't matter if I bled on them. During today in the hospital I wore yoga pants and a nursing tank with a zip up cardigan or hoodie.

Also, wear the mesh undies they give you! They are super comfy, big enough to accommodate the giant pad you will be wearing and you can just toss them after each wear.

Honestly, I plan to wear yoga pants and just comfy t shirts this time around, maybe a nursing nightgown and robe. I brought my most uncomfortable clothes last time, and it made me feel even worse about my appearance after giving birth.

For us: How much time will DH plan to take off work after baby arrives. Who will be in room during delivery.

I love this thread and wish I had something similar with my dd.

  • After labor I wore yoga pants and a loose top with sports bra after the second day. I was all about the hospital gown day one. The mesh panties they give you are the best for the first week since you bleed so much and you can barely feel them. Also, a huge suggestion is getting a postpartum wrap, I got the one from Target (can't remember the name). I couldn't fit into it til day 3, but it was a God send. No one told me how deflated you feel afterwards and how when you bend forward you have no stomach control. Makes sense obviously, but the wrap was magic.

I wish I would've taken more pics as well, and really just tried to slow down and enjoy the process more. I was in too big of a hurry to have him here, and afterwards missed it.

Honestly as far as talking to your partner, finances and delivery day are important to be on the same page. It's hard to try and prepare guys for baby because everything changes the moment they see them.
