Massive meltdowns

So.. About two weeks ago LO woke up FREAKING.. Screaming louder than I've ever heard and nothing would soothe him. FTM here freaked and took him to the dr- he was perfectly fine and ended up pooping 3 times later that day (most EVER).. So I chalked it up to constipation/more consistent stools. But.. These crazy meltdown sessions have now happened 3-4 more times and literally nothing will help and he seems In such terrible pain. I still think it's him trying to poop more.. But.. Does anyone else have an LO that has crazy freakouts that scare the bejeezus out of you? What do you do to help LO? What do you do to stay calm yourself? All of our go to tricks aren't working And I feel terrible for him :-(

  • Is he teething? My LO would wake up crying, just histerical. Thought it might be his new normal, the room was too dark, he was dreaming, etc. on Christmas Eve we realized he had his bottom two teeth coming in. They cut through the day after Christmas. Ever since they've come in, he wakes up fine. Just talking to the walls.

I thought he naught be teething, but I never felt any teeth until they literally just pooped up out of nowhere.

    I hope uo

  • We've been dealing w that a bit here, too. They've either been overtired and had too many people in their face in a new environment (at the ILs), needed to poop/fart, or teething.

They don't have any teeth yet, but by the time the tooth breaks through the most painful part is over. It's the pushing up through the gum that hurts the most.

I'm very judicious w giving meds while teething. I just don't like any of the products out there and usually just let it run its course. I'll do a pain reliever every once in a while.

  • @lemsa that's a good point... I haven't felt any teeth yet and had been so focused on him pooping that teething never crossed my mind.. Let's hope that's it!!

  • LO has had this happen a couple times but I don't think it's had any common factors when it does happen. Sorry I'm of no help. I also hate knowing they're waking up terrified and not knowing why.
  • Yeah my daughter did it in the car yesterday. We pulled over about a bazillion times to comfort her, I tried
To feed her, white noise, etc. Nothing helped and I was balling because LO hardly ever cries and it sounded like someone was trying to hurt her she was crying so bad. She is also teething but my goodness it is so scary! Once we got home and gave her some Tylenol she was her happy self again.
  • I don't have any experience in it, but I know that a friend of mine had a baby, and when she was a few months old, she would wake up screaming and crying so hard.  She took her to the doctor and her doctor said that it could be night terrors.  A baby who is only a few months old is still trying to get used to the world outside, and they still can remember birth.  Birth is a really hard thing for babies and they apparently can sometimes have nightmares from it.

How anyone is able to tell what a baby is dreaming about, I don't know....but it made sense to me.

  • Mines been doing this too for the past few weeks...sometimes she just needs the pacifier, but sometimes she takes awhile to sooth. She had an ear infection, so we thought that was the culprit, but that is good and gone, and it's still happening. The suggestions on this thread are helpful. Thanks!

  • My LO did this yesterday too. For 2 hours. Screeching and screaming as if she was being stabbed. We both ended up crying :/ I guess I'm just chalking the meltdown up to being in a strange environment and having so many new people in her face (we had driven 2 hours to a family Xmas party with about 25 new faces, and it was hot as balls in the house) I hope our LOs get more comfy soon and figure it out!!!

  • Soooo... I always sound like a psycho when I say this, but it works insanely well for my little one.

When this happens, we go to the chiropractor. It stops it immediately. Her chiro specializes in peds and specializes in atlas (tiny bone in the neck,) adjustments. She is amazeballs. Also, modern chiropractic training is not the traditional "back cracking". It is much gentler. I can tell when my LO needs to go in when she has sudden meltdowns.

  • I agree @bellaoso. I use to work for a chiropractor and they (well, some) are amazing! Adjustments truly help so much after childbirth, for both mommy and baby!
  • Thanks for the tip @bellaoso ! I am a little intimidated With finding a good ped one in my area... :-/

  • Mine will happily recommend and knows people across the country because they go to national conventions all the time. I will PM you her info.

Another tip: Contact a local LC and ask who they recommend a lot of times they have the inside track on who is a good infant chiropractor.

I second the chiro! DD2 gets adjusted every week when I go, we missed one week and she came down with the same cold that has been running through me/DH/DD1 for the past 6 weeks (which, up until this point DD2 has managed to avoid). I swear it's because we missed our normal appt. Which I know probably sounds crazy to those of you who don't do chiropractic. But there really is a legit science behind it, and a good chiro can make a huge difference in your wellness!

  • Chiropractic adjustments are awesome. I didn't think to go because of random melt downs though. I will be booking an appointment for the new year.

I thought it might have been nightmares since she'd wake up screaming and crying. She always calms down after some skin to skin nursing. It's times like this I wish she could tell me what's going on.

  • I wonder if there are any demo videos out there.. What exactly do they do to LO? I just keep imagining what I think of when I think of the chiropractor.. And it seems scary :-/

Thread jack: what does a normal baby chiro appt look like? I've heard that it could really help with LOs reflux but my H does not like the idea at all. I really would like to explore this option but need to get my H on board.

    @bellaoso @zever000 @that.just.happened. yes! LO also has reflux ... Pls explain :-)

My chiropractor specializes in pediatric adjustments, so I'm not sure if she does anything differently. But she puts LO on a change table type thing and gently (seriously, super gently) assesses LO range of movement. She checks hips, neck, arms and legs etc. Then picks LO up and will put a little amount of pressure on "trouble spots" while bouncing/rocking LO.

My LO has trouble with turning her head to the right so she gives a little neck massage on that side while encouraging her to look that way. She also puts her finger on either side of LO's lumbar spine (which apparently is a digestive trouble spot) and bounces LO on her fingers to "work out the pressure". I've really seen an improvement and LO doesn't seem bothered by it at all. In fact you can kind of see the relief in her face when it starts to feel better. It's really helped us anyways.

  • @KatieS7 I don't think so. Mine does a lot of continuing education and paediatric seminars. I'd give your local clinic a call and see what they say.

  • @KatieS7 -

Zever's assessment is pretty similar to what mine does. She looks at leg length, range of movement, we talk about what has been hard and easy, and she feels or sore spots and places that are out of alignment. She adjusts her lower back with an actuator which is extremely gentle. She has another tool that is specifically for adjusting her atlas because it is a tiny bone.

I seriously thought there was something wrong with my baby when she was born because she was a nutcase. Since we started chiro care, she is a happy, easy, smiley, amazing baby. When she cries out suddenly, I know we need to go in and after we do, I get my smiley baby back. I told my chiro on Friday, "Thank you for my happy baby." and it is true! She made all the difference.

Most chiros in my area - especially ones who specialize in peds are more than willing to meet with you and discuss concerns and fears and show you the equipment, let you feel the pressure, etc. I know mine will. The thing with most chiros is that they got into it because they genuinely WANT to make people feel better, and they are usually more than willing to convince you to let them make you feel better.

My DH was not thrilled when I wanted to take DD1 in for reflux, but when it went away and she started STTN he was all for it. With DD2 it took no convincing at all. DD2 has had a dramatic turn around.
