Clothes for LO at hospital?

I'm full of questions this weekend as I adjust my plans from having a February baby to a January one :) My husband is a big guy, so I've been only buying 0-3 month clothes and no newborns (same with gifts we have received). Now that I know the baby will be induced early, he will probably be more of an average newborn size (estimating 7 lbs- but who knows really!). I know he will mostly wear whatever they have at the hospital but I was thinking I'd bring two possible outfits for coming home. I don't care much about how it looks (I mean, most baby clothes are cute right?) but I want to make sure he is warm enough- it's Boston winter so it will be cold. I also want it to be easy to get on/off etc.

Any suggestions for what you are bringing? Bonus for pictures :) I was hoping to find something at the Gap because I have a gift card but I'm open to any suggestions at the moment!

  • We bought this from gap for going home - it's a 0-3m sweater one-piece.

    However, similar to you, we're thinking little guy is coming early, so I packed a second smaller outfit. This one is Gymboree, also 0-3, but looks a lot smaller in person.

    Gap has "upto 7lb" options, while Gymboree has "5-9lb" options. I might pack one more Carter's size Newborn just in case. Those are 5-8lb, and DS is already measuring 6lb1oz, so he should fit the Carter's at least.

    Good luck!

  • My LO is coming home in a cute fleece footsie jammy. I am bringing a premie, newborn and 0-3 month. Just so you know newborn is up to about 7-8 lbs so you might still wanna pack a 0-3 month. My second baby was born at 36.3 weeks at 7.3lbs. Hope that helps :)

  • My DH is 6'7" with an athletic build. DS was 8lbs at birth. DS wore newborn clothes for 3 weeks. (Just bc your DH is a big guy doesn't mean your newborn will be)

    We bought a couple footed sleepers for this LO to come home in. Take more than 1 outfit just incase LO poops/pees/pukes on one. :)

    I would get something with footies.  Socks never stay on for the first several months.

     We're in the Boston area too.  This LO is coming home in a slightly fancy cotton sleep and play and matching hat.  I will probably layer a long sleeve onsie underneath.  We'll carry her from the hospital to the car in her infant seat with the Bundle Me and an extra blanket tucked into the Bundle Me.

    The outfit I will pack is 0-3.  DD was a summer baby so I had to buy all new winter stuff for this LO.  I didn't buy any newborn stuff this time because DD was 9lbs 5oz and only fit into her newborn stuff for like a week.  In your situation, I would probably pack a newborn outfit and maybe an extra 0-3.

  • I bought a couple knitted onesies from the Gap, that seem like they'd be a little warmer. And they don't have feet, so you could roll up the legs if needed. I can't find a pic for the monkey one that matches the hat. But maybe I'm a weirdo for wanting to dress up baby like an animal? I'm a sucker for any outfit with ears.imageimage

    That's freaking adorable!!!
  • I plan to bring a NB and 0-3m outfit for 'coming home'. Just because I'm weird and like to have options, I will likely also take a few long sleeve onesies, and a couple fleece sleepers in both sizes as well. I hope to take several cute pictures while in the hospital, so I'll bring a couple headbands/hats too.

    I'm bringing NB carters outfit for LO. My son was born at 7 lbs and wore NB size clothes for at least 3 weeks if not more. The 0-3 stuff was all so big on him in the beginning. She will wear a super cute hat with a bow that says little sister.

    Then I bought the same outfit in 12 months so I can take a picture hopefully around a year later in the same outfit as her coming home outfit!

    I also suggest bringing a couple sleepers. As soon as they bathed DS I got him dressed in "real" clothes. It just seemed more natural and was nice when we had visitors.

    I've got 3 different sweater one piece outfits. 2 are NB size and 1 is 0-3 mos. The NB size look odd to me though... the legs are really short on both of them and they look weird. But I guess that's b/c newborns keep their legs tucked up so it doesn't really matter?  1 is from Target- it's cream with cable knit and a pink bow around the middle. The second one is Ralph Lauren. SIL just gave it to me for Christmas and it may be the one. It's brown with little embroidered flowers. If I can find a coordinating hat, this is it. The 0-3 mos one hasn't come yet. I ordered it on zulily last week... it's pink cable knit with a matching hat. Totally adorable but I'm betting it will be too big. We have small/average size babies.

  • DS was 8lb 7oz and wore NB for a few weeks. We only brought a 0-3 month outfit for him to wear home and he was swimming in it. We are Team Green, so I'm going to get something for a girl and something for a boy, probably just NB size, and definitely something with feet since socks didn't stay on DS for quite awhile :)

    I have the SAME outfit from Gymboree and it's probably my favorite thing we own so far. Unfortunately it's a little bigger so I don't think it will work as a going home outfit but I love it!!

    Both of my other babies came home in similar outfits and I assure you there was plenty of room around the umbilical area.  I was more concerned with the carseat straps hurting it but we had no issues.

    I am thinking one of the below but I was wondering that baby might be swaddled as well so I might just do a simple onesie inside with a nice swaddle hat matching set on the outside.

    Good to know! I've been wondering what to put LO in and had to keep rejecting her cute one piece outfits.

  • We got a fleece newborn sleeper from Carter's, my mom friends told me that they Run on the bigger side, so I'm not worried. I can't link or pip from my iPad, but it's grey with pink polka dots and appliqué penguins, I'm obsessed with penguins.

    they told us today at childbirth class motto bring other clothes other than what she's wearing home since they'll dress them in the snap shirt and blanket since that's easiest for being checked all the time, and we'd be asked to remove onesies, sleepers, whatever every time a doc or nurse came to check her out.

    The swaddle is cute, but couldn't be worn when in the car seat I don't think... @Hg45

    Something new for me to learn- the baby needs to have his/her arms unrestricted in a car seat? I did not think about that. Is it true for even new born? Don't mean to sound like a idiot- I have full intentions of getting clear instructions and understanding on how to put baby safely in car seat in the next couple weeks but obviously am not there yet :-)

    And legs unrestricted. The seatbelt goes between their little legs. Swaddle/sleep sack doesn't work for a carseat.

  • DS was ten pounds and he still needed a newborn size the first week or so.  I think it really depends on the baby, but I'd buy a couple just in case.

  • @hg45 Definitely no swaddling before strapping in the car seat ... You can kind of swaddle after baby is all buckled securely. You can tuck their arms and legs with a blanket. But they should be buckled in with minimal material between baby and the straps.

  • I would go with a footed pajama and small fleece jacket, hat, and then a blanket on top.

    My tip is to make sure you bring at least 2-- newborns have diaper issues at random times, when you're changing them, or things leak, etc. if you know what I'm getting at! lol

  • Don't buy the original bundle me. It is NOT SAFE. I know we've discussed this before. I know it looks snuggly and warm and I know what it's like to live in a cold climate, but don't buy it.

    Baby will be fine with a shower cap style cover and a blanket. You can put baby in a fleece sleeper and light fleece coat, clip baby in, throw a blanket over baby, put on the cover, and carry baby to the car. And that may be too warm once the car heats up--car seats are warm.

  • I was given a gently used original Bundle Me a few months ago, before I knew that they were not recommended in car seats. Since, I have decided not to use it, unless we are out for a walk or something in the stroller, as it would still work great for that. I had hoped to get a shower cap-style cover, but I didn't receive one for my shower, and will plan to start out with just a blanket and see how it goes.

    Woah, totally missed that the originals are not recommended anymore ... How come?

    Nothing aftermarket is tested, so anything that goes between baby and the car seat/straps that hasn't been tested for safety should be a huge no. Add in the puffy factor makes it impossible to get the seat tight enough (the puff will compress in a crash and allow LO to be ejected), and you can see why it's unsafe.

    I don't think they've ever been recommended. My niece is five and they weren't considered safe when she was born.

    If I get it, it will be for walks if we decide to use the car seat with the stroller instead of the bassinet. Not risking it on a car ride! Realistically I need to get out of my house, even if it is to walk to get a cappuccino a couple blocks down. But it is amazing how many people I otherwise trust use them in the car.
    Yeah, but see typically, you aren't going to want to put that thing on just for a quick trip to starbucks- it's not practical.  And when caffeine jitters are involved, you won't want any delays ;-)  You want something that is easy to pop on/off as needed.  Hence the shower cap style recommendation.

    And omg, you will find out that you know A LOT more about infant safety than the average mom/dad who is not on the bump regularly.  I swear, my brother/SIL think I'm a carseat nazi b/c I keep my kids rear facing for long and b/c I insist that their 7 year old sit in a booster in my car.  I even gave them their convertible carseat last year for their youngest child and knew my brother wouldn't bother to read the instructions to get a good install so I made DH put it in their car before we left.  I love them, and they really are good parents, but this stuff seems like overkill to them.  Sometimes I do think the bump is actually a little too paranoid about this stuff and it adds to FTM paranoia but then again, I guess I'd rather be accused of being OVER protective than UNDER protective.

    Yes, this is a mom-blog but she shows pictures why:image

    She also quotes car seat manufacturers on use of bundleme-like products:

    But don't take our word for it, here is what the car seat manufacturers have to say about aftermarket products. These excerpts were taken directly from the child safety seat instruction manuals.

    * Baby Trend

    o Do Not dress your child in bulky clothing or other garments that will hinder the harness from being snug around your baby and properly latched between your child's legs.

    o Accessory products for use with the Safety Seat are acceptable for use provided that they do not interfere with the harness assembly, or the proper adjustment of the harness such that it remains tight on the child's shoulders at all times. Thick, soft, or other compressible material in excess of 1/4 inch thick should not be placed behind or under the child or between the child and harness straps. Examples of accessory products are head support pillows or rolled blankets to add additional head support.

    * Britax

    o The use of non-Britax Child Safety, Inc. covers, inserts, toys, accessories, or tightening devices is not approved by Britax. Their use could cause this restraint to fail Federal Safety Standards or perform worse in a crash. Their use automatically voids the Britax warranty.

    * Chicco

    o NEVER use clothing or blankets that interfere with fastening or tightening the harness. An unsecured child could be ejected in a sudden stop or crash! To keep child warm, place a blanket over child and restraint AFTER you have properly secured child in harness.

    o DO NOT use any accessories, pads or products supplied by other manufacturers with this Child Restraint. Items not tested with this restraint could injure your child.

    * Dorel (Maxi Cosi, Cosco, Eddie Bauer, Safety 1st): o Dorel Juvenile Group does not recommend the use of any child restraint accessories except those recommended by DJG.

    * Evenflo

    o In cold weather, DO NOT dress the child in bulky clothing like snowsuits if the child is riding in a child restraint. Bulky coats/ snowsuits make it difficult to properly tighten the harness to the child, which may allow the child to be ejected from the restraint during a crash.

    * Graco

    o DO NOT use accessories or parts other than those provided by Graco. Their use could alter the performance of the car seat.

    * Orbit

    o Do not modify your Infant Car Seat or Base. Only use products and accessories approved by Orbit Baby to ensure the safety of your child. This limited warranty does not apply to: defects resulting from use with covers, inserts, accessories, tightening devices, or other components not supplied by or expressly approved in writing by Orbit Baby.

    * Peg Perego

    o Use only approved parts. Use of unapproved parts can affect the safety of the car seat and cause serious injuries in an accident.

    * Sunshine Kids

    o Using any non-Sunshine Kids product with this restraint; or any product not specifically approved by Sunshine Kids for use with this restraint is not allowed. Use of such products voids manufacturer's warranty and may seriously impact the products ability to perform properly in an accident.

    @NextVerseUnknown ... Thank you. I did see this last night. My question though is that car seat manufacturers say "no after market products" period ... It's a warrantee issue. That doesn't necessarily mean that every after market product is going to be unsafe. I'm wanting to know if there has ever been a documented case of the BundleMe causing infant injury when used in a car seat? Has this ever actually happened or is it theoretical?

    I'm wondering if it matters whether it has happened or not... Wouldn't the theoretical threat be enough to try and keep LO safe?

    @jammersc - they void the warrantee because they have not been crash tested with every seat. And the bundle me would affect the use of every seat differently because the straps have to be adjusted for use ( as opposed to blankets over straps or shower cap covers). There is proof that straps need to be loosened for its use, and there is proof that the material compresses like that of puffy coats. There are reports of accidents where the compression of puffy coats causes baby to be ejected from car seat. That's enough evidence off me. I don't want my baby to be the one to prove a direct correlation, so I won't use a bundle me. It's a risk you can choose to take, but I wouldn't feel right letting anyone use a bundle me with this knowledge.

  • I don't need proof/evidence that baby can come out of the car seat in a crash if heavy coats/Bundle Mes are used. If the straps are that loose, it just makes sense for me not to risk it!
