Iron cribs

Does anyone have experience using one? I've found a few articles online saying they're not safe but they list no resources, mostly just opinions.

I like how they look better than the wood ones, they're more durable, it'll be easily used for boys or girls and when we're done with it we can sell it and get most of our money back. This this similar to the one we're looking at.
  • My biggest concern is that you aren't supposed to use bumpers in cribs anymore, and I know C is constantly banging her head against the crib slats. Wooden ones, eh, but iron?  Ouch!  I love the look and these days they can treat them so the rust isn't an issue.

All cribs are baby jails whether wood or iron. The benefit is the same for wood: keeps kid confined/safe.

OP: I love iron too. We actually picked up an iron headboard/baseboard for DD. Like a pp, I woulf mostly worry about head banging in it.

  • I think it will be fine as long as it is new and not painted. Iron slats aren't going to be any more dangerous for baby and it is a nice look! Just make sure it isn't creaky- we bought DD an iron bed and ended up selling it because we couldn't deal with how loud it was. It squeaked and rattled constantly! On a crib, the baby isn't actually laying on the iron bars so it shouldn't rattle as much.
  • I haven't used one but they look nice.
  • What happens if they bite on it? I had a guard on there but Lincoln still gnawed like crazy on that thing. Can it flake off?

From what I've read it doesn't flake. The chewing is one of the benefits that is listed for it.

Oh I hadn't thought about bumping their heads. Is there an age where it's safe to put bumpers in there to safe guard that?
  • The general consensus is that bumpers aren't safe, so there isn't an age to put them in there.  As far as bumping against the sides, some kids do it a ton, and some kids (like my daughter) almost never do it.  She's never had a bumper, and though she would occasionally cuddle up against the side, at most it would leave a little red mark against her head from where she slept touching it. I assumed if it bothered her, she'd move.   I can't imagine an iron crib would be any worse for than than a wooden crib, they are both pretty hard.

  • We have a Bratt Decor iron crib and we love it! We don't have a fluffy bumper on it, just a breathable bumper. My almost 17 month old moves a lot in her sleep and has never gotten hurt. Ever! Also there is no way the paint can flake off.

    We really love our crib!

That's great to hear! I'll look into the breathable bumpers!
  • I can see chewing being a benefit when they are getting their first teeth...but I would honestly be concerned about damage to the teeth once they get some in. Wood has some give...iron doesn't. Then again my DD never chewed on her crib or even used tethers, hated them, so I never had an issue with that.
