Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

crib to bed

DH and I are expecting LO #2 on 8/18 (DS will be 2 yrs 2 months).  We really want to avoid bringing another crib into the house, so we're thinking about moving DS to a bed when he turns 2.  Any one else in a similar situation or have had experience with the transition?  Any tips?

Re: crib to bed

  • With my son, we would go over and sit on his new toddler bed.  But it was actually cold turkey when we transitioned him.  We put my daughter in the crib one night and showed my son, and then we walked over to his toddler bed and told him that was his bed.  He did not get it at first.  He fell out of bed a couple of times and slept on the carpet. So it was better for us that he had a toddler bed that was lower to the floor.

For both kids now, sometimes we will all sleep on the big double bed together.  My 1 year daughter and when my son was 2 years old would have a tendency to fall off that bed.  So you have to be careful about beds that are higher because they can fall off when they are younger.  But now that my son is 3 years old, he does well in a higher bed.  So he will sleep in his toddler bed or the big double bed.

  • I don't have any experience with this, but I'm guessing we'll have to move DD due to climbing around that time - she's been a little acrobat climber since the moment she figured out she could move on her hands and knees.

I'm planning to start her on a mattress on the floor, and then we'll put the frame up when she's mostly staying in the bed.  People also suggest putting a pool noodle under the fitted sheet to keep them from rolling everywhere.
  • Our almost-16-month-old just spent his first night in his toddler bed last night, and we're all still standing! We actually kept the crib set up for now in case things went bad, so we could have a backup plan, but our son seemed cool with the new bed (for now, anyways!), so we didn't end up using the crib. I will say, he crawled out of the toddler bed a few times and cried a little bit, so we just went in to calm him and that time he stayed. I'm suuure that won't be the last time, but he was really tired last night, so bow I think he at least gets that it's a sleeping place, and we shall see what happens from here...
  • DS busts out of his crib two weeks ago out of nowhere so we went cold turkey with the mattress on the floor that night. We quickly pulled out anything he could climb on, shut the door and that was it.
It took him 1 1/2 hours to fall a sleep the first night, 45 minutes the second and now he goes right to his little floor bed and cuddles in for the night.
We had planned to do a slower transitions, but necessity beat is to the punch.
It was so much easier than we thought, we had been dreading the transition but we are so happy he made the move before our new arrival in June.
