Your Pedi - likes/dislikes

Okay, I promise this is my last post of the night :)

After I posted the well-child post, I thought of this one.  What do you like/dislike about your Pedi (including things like the office, handouts, style, etc.)?  Anything you wish he/she did differently?

Re: Your Pedi - likes/dislikes

  • @nursemommy13 Paper charts sound amazing! Sometimes I wish we could go back to them because I hate our current EMR!

  • Likes: great reputation. Great at diagnosing sickness, and genuinely cares for my son while we are there.

Dislikes: I have waited up to an hour for a well visit and his patient load is triple the rest of the practice. The last two times we've gone we've had new nurses in training which says something about the way his staff is treated. He also gave little to no guidance when it came to starting solids and he never heard of baby led weaning

I like him, but I'm not in love. I would switch once someone better comes along.

  • We just pcs'ed and JUST got a new pedi. She's OK, but I miss the one we had previously, and I'm on the hunt for a better one off base.

I really like our pedi. She seems very knowledgable, yet doesn't make you feel intimidated or anything. She doesn't seem to think any questions we have are stupid, or if she does, she keeps it to herself. The other doctors in her practice are very nice too. Also, I love that they have separate waiting areas for well visits and sick visits. Finally, I love that their waiting times are usually so short. We usually wait about five minutes. I think once we waited maybe 10-15 when they were pretty busy. That's so much better than my GP where I often wait 30 minutes or more! There are only two minor things I don't like about the practice, and neither has to do with the actual pediatricians. The one is that while they do sick visits up until 5:30 or occasionally later if they are really busy, they won't schedule well appointments past 2:30. This is very inconvienient for me as I don't get done work until 3, and being a teacher, it's not very easy for me to get out early. I either have to take a whole day off or a half day. My husband can take off more easily, but I like going to all of LO's visits. The second thing I would change is very minor. The rooms there, like many pedis, are a little small. We stopped bringing the car seat in because it just felt too crowded. Their sister office a couple of towns away has slightly bigger rooms, and I wish ours were like that.
  • I really like mine. Mostly, he has a great demeanor and is able to calm me down whenever I worry about stuff. He knows when to talk to me in simple terms and when to talk about the details, facts and recent studies. The only negative is that he doesn't do emails. Some of my doctors, you can email them ( usually their nurse reads them and respond after talking to the doctor) but with my pedi, I have to call and wait for a call back to ask any questions

  • I like mine because it has Saturday hours and some days in the week they are open until 8. There are 3 doctors in the practice and they are all very different. One doctor is a man with a ponytail who is for all things "natural." Which is nice, because a lot of doctors don't do that. But he is in and out very quickly, doesn't talk much, and there isn't much time for questions. Then there is an older lady who is the opposite. She talks about everything and anything and the visit lasts really long. She looked at me like I was crazy when I told her I put coconut oil on his rash. But she is very nice an thorough. The last pedi is a combination of the other two and we like her the best. She is very nice, answers all out questions, and is really good with LO. Unfortunately, she is not always there, so we sometimes have to see the other two. The waiting time isn't too long which is good, but there isn't much to do in the waiting room for the older kids.

  • I love our pediatrician group. They are just wonderful people. They're through Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and I just completely trust them.

Their wait times are short, well and sick waiting areas, genuinely nice nurses and doctors. I have always felt important being there. They really take their time and answer any questions we have.

They have an after hours call center and also a "walk in clinic" from 5-9pm M-F and 9am-2pm Saturday and Sunday. Where you can just walk in and see a pediatrician from the group. I LOVE that!
  • I am so happy with our pediatrician. She is very soft spoken and so gentle with Ben. He sometimes freaks out around strangers, so she always makes it a point to talk to him and get him comfortable before examining him. She has one son and is expecting another, so I feel like she really understands my concerns- even if they are more parenting related.

I also love that she never has judged me or made me feel guilty about switching to formula. My former OB gave me hell about it and made me feel terrible. The pedi never even mentioned it.

  • Our old pedi was very rushed in the appointment. And he always left the room because he forgot a pen, our his id card, and paper. From start to finish the appt was under 10 min. If I had questions he would tell me he'd email me, or he'd give me a hand out instead of just taking his time with us. He also talked really fast.
We've just moved so I hope to find a great pedi here.

  • I love our Pedi. He was mine and sees my little sister and nieces and nephews so if there's a bug going around the family he already knows we're going to call. He's very reassuring and always makes me feel better when I have a concern. His nurse who's been there all along have me her personal phone number to use instead of the after hours number. I don't mind the waiting rooms because I've met some nice moms there.

The only thing I don't like is his old school view on parenting techniques. He asked if DD was STTN I said no. So his response was to put her in her crib and not go in her room until morning. Um no. If DD wakes up crying she doesn't self soothe. She vomits and starts shaking like she's terrified. Also I should stop responding to her cries for attention.
