2014 Forester or 2013 Rav4-anyone have one?

DH and are up upgrading my Mazda3 so we can fit both car seats in my car and still fit someone in my passenger seat since we travel several hours to visit our families.

We have our choices narrowed down to the 2014 Subaru Forester and the 2013 Toyota Rav4. We're looking at the newer models due to significantly better fuel mileage than their older models.

Any reviews or recommendations? Thanks!

  • I have 2012 rav 4 and I love it. I don't know anything about the Subaru forester. It's roomy and I love how the whole back seat lays down flat in two different sections if I need to transport big items. I've always like Hondas and toyotas. I get about 28-32 mpg.

  • I had a forester and loved it! It drove wonderful, never had any issues with it mechanically in the year or two i had it. Lots of room, the 4 wheel drive was a plus! I think it took me like $50 to fill up, and that was when gas was almost $4 a gallon here.

  • I just got a rav4 and I love it! I bought an older model bc it had a better price and wasn't much different then the 2013/2014. Definetly has a ton of room.
Plus Toyota engines run forever. Parts are cheaper and way easier to find if something breaks and your warrantee doesn't cover it. (Sorry my inner car nerd leaked out for a sec. ) granted that's not to say the Subaru isn't nice. You get a little more space but they have been known to have drive train issues.
  • I'm a subie girl all the way! I have a Legacy, but my sister has a new Forrester and I'm totally jealous of it.
  • Thanks for he input. We are leaning towards the forester since it's the top safety pick for this year plus it is designed to be an awd vehicle. We usually don't get a ton of snow in the DC area but 2 inches puts everyone into panic mode. Being from PA a few inches is no big deal and snow days are great days to run errands.

We're test driving in a few hours and hopefully I end up with a new car soon!
  • I've never driven either, but have friends with both. Subaru drivers always seem crazy happy with their cars.

  • One of my bFFs has a forester and loves it
I'd go that route by far
  • Sorry @futuremrssprigs I didn't mean to flag you and I can't figure out how to remove it. Stupid mobile bumping. @bunnyfungo can you fix that?
  • @bearsbearsbears thanks for the tip. I hope it worked.

Also we decided on the Subaru! I felt like I could see a lot better. The Rav4 had smaller windows and I felt like there were a lot of blind spots. The Subaru felt roomier too.

DH works for a BMW dealership and he gets a discount at other dealerships his company owns. So with his discount the Subaru actually ends up being cheaper than the Rav4 too!
  • I'm on my 3rd Subaru - my parents are on their 8th & 9th. I wish I was kidding :) We have owned other cars, just keep going back!

  • So happy to see so many Subie girls on here! We started with our sporty Impreza WRX and I totally fell in love with Subarus. Then we traded it in for my 2013 Outback when we had DD. Once you go Subaru, it's tough to go back. They're so incredibly safe and good at handling absolutely all weather. They're not flashy and not for blingy people, I'll admit. They're just humble, unassuming, roomy, reliable, and safe. Not to say Toyotas aren't a good choice too - we did briefly look at the Rav4, but I can't go back after having a Subaru.
  • I have never been a car girl! But when H and I started dating he had his WRX and taught me how to drive stick... So of course when it was time to get me a car more suitable for a mommy we went with the 2014 Forester. I've had it since August, and seriously, It's amazing! Subaru always!
