I am not banking. At first i thought I would but after some research, have decided the chance of being able to use it are so slim, it's nt with the cost to me.

I'm looking into donating. If cost was not an issue I would, but out of pocket infertility treatments in addition to yearly storage fees for frozen embryos, just can't swing it. But if my hospital can arrange donation, I'm going that route.

I am doing with both kids. This kid also gets the tissue banked since it was not available before. It saves lives.

wow, I thought the yearly fee was around 1,000 and a couple of thousand to bank, I will look into it again. Also I think my hospital only uses certain companies so options are sort of limited.

We didn't. I looked into the cost and it was expensive. I figured that they send me so many ads in the mail, that of course it's to make money. I do have friends with health issues who have done this.

Sometimes you can bank publicly. My hospital did not participate in this in 2011. NOt sure yet if they do now.

At my appointment today, my ob actually gave me the packet for cord blood banking, which is good because I couldnt remember specifics. Last time we went through CBR. The initial feels for the first year were steep -- around $2000 for the collection kit, shipping, and first year of storage. You can divide that into payments over 6 or 48 months or pay in full. The yearly fee is $130 after the first year. To do cord blood and tissue is about $3000 for the first year and $260 yearly fee.

We're definitely not doing it.  I honestly think it sounds like kind of a scam -- cord blood companies overstate the benefits of it to make a profit. The chances of your child or a sibling benefiting from that cord blood is very small.  It's not recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics or the American College of Obstetricians and Gynocologists.  My OB practice discourages it.  I'd rather donate it to a public bank, if that is an option at our hospital.

This is a pretty good discussion of the controversy:

this. i'm a huge fan of science/med technology but i read the literature or should i say "ads" myself.  the only thing i could see it
possibly being helping for are conditions such as leukemia.  the many many other conditions they list don't make the cut IMO.  it made me feel better when my OB told me she didn't do it for her children.  i am also in the medical field myself.

I had a friend diagnosed with leukemia who deeply regretted not banking the cords of the children. Came very close to losing his life.
