Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby only wakes to feed and is right back to sleep.

It doesn't matter what I do during the day; bright lighting, tv on, toys out, talking to her, even vacuuming! She sleeps all day, and only wakes to feed every two or three hours! Then she is up every hour at night wanting to eat. I am breastfeeding her and she is just now 3 weeks old, but was born 3 weeks early. Any suggestions?

She needs to sleep a lot right now, especially having arrived early. I agree with PP about waking her every 2-3 hours during the day to feed her, and then at night you just have to roll with it and feed her as often as she wants. Things will change, hopefully sooner than later, but this is normal for a newborn. My LO was 7 weeks early, and he was the same way for awhile. So I feel your pain, but it will get better.
Agreed with this. Wake during the day but let sleep at night and wake when she wakes. Regardless, she'll still be sleeping alot at this age. Wake times will increase, you'll see things change quite rapidly before your eyes.

Also get her out in the day to get her circadian clock set by exposing her to natural daylight. This will help her to get her days/nights straight. Days will be worth staying up for eventually because of everything going on.

One day you'll be begging her to sleep ;)

  • This is normal and to be expected. My son was like that when he was born. He slept all day and was up all night. It was hell for my husband and I. My LO is now 12 weeks old and pretty much sleeps through the night, with occasionally waking up at 3am and 6am. It's pretty nice only having to wake up once at night. By the time 6am rolls around and he's awake again to eat, I'm up getting ready for work. Anyhow, I wish u all the best! It will get better!
  • My DD is 8 weeks old, and is very much a sleeper.  Her first 5 weeks were sleep, wake, eat, diaper change, sleep.  She's just now beginning to get into interaction.  She likes to be part of the conversation and she likes her toys a bit now.
It's totally normal.  If LO is gaining weight just fine, do not wake her.  Just let her sleep.  And, I agree with PP who said that one day, you'll be begging her to sleep!! :)

  • Thanks for the advice everyone! She eats anywhere from 15 to 40 mins at a time. In the hospital she lost 9% of her body weight, but as of last Thursday she is just above birth weight, so I assume she is on track in eating department. And she has plenty of wet and dirty diapers a day. She was actually awake more today so hoping tonight goes better!
