Do you get some sort of handout at your well-child checks from your doc? Do you like getting the handout? Bonus points for a pic sample of the handout!

ETA: I'm using you ladies to see what I should do with my practice so any tips would be greatly appreciated :)

Re: Well-child checks

  • @cl8badb A handout on things like anticipatory guidance specific for that age group, what to expect in the next few months, tips on health stuff, growth percentages, etc.
  • Loading the player...
  • I get two, one is specific to Beckett and the visit and includes info on reactions to shots, next appt, vitals, etc. The other is a 'Bright Futures' handout that is specific to his age but includes general info like solids, teeth, development and safety. I love them because it is hard to take a lot of notes while I am wrangling the LO.

  • We get one.  Especially as a STM I wish they would have a copy they show you while you're there and then ask you if you'd like to take one home.  I can look it over pretty quickly if I care to and I'm sure it's useful for some parents but I never want to take them home :)

  • As a FTM I love the handouts. We get one with a graph charting LO's growth with his percentiles. Also handouts for starting solids and the vaccines he received.

  • I get shot I formation every time. I wish they would do the growth chart print outs at my office and a memo about solids would be nice.
  • Another thing they are thinking about trying are group visits. So a group of 5-10 parents would come in for an hour and sit with one doc and discuss current issues around sleep (as an example). Not only do you get advice from the physician, but you hear what others have tried and learn new ideas. Plus it creates new relationships within the group that can be carried on outside the appointment. These are also billable visits for the practice. I lead a market wide strategic planning council and this practice was one of our first projects last year. They do some other really amazing things that I can share if interested. ETA: I realize this post solidifies my nerd status.
@42Butterflies I like the idea of a questionnaire/feeding schedule - can you take a screen shot for me to give me an idea?

The group visits are a cool idea - however, I'm not sure this practice can support that type of volume YET.  I work in a hospital-based clinic and they hired the first Pediatrician last year and me this year.  Prior to this, there was no Pediatrician within a one-hour radius, so most families commuted to the next town over.  We're working on recruiting all those patients back, so our numbers are still growing.

I would love to hear any other ideas you have, too!
  • I still get the hand out for my 11 yr old... :D
  • I get a handout, it's mostly useless but I do like that the Tylenol/Motrin dosage is on there. I keep it on our fridge bc DH tends to forget that all the time.

It looks like I am in the minority. I get handouts, and I wish they would save trees. The stuff on the well visit handouts is all common sense stuff or stuff I already know. The only handouts they have given me that I felt were helpful were the Tylenol dosing instructions and the handout on shots.

ETA: I like the printout they give us on his weight and percentile and all too. But like I said, I think the well-visit handout is a joke.
  • I love our handouts. They have the growth stats for that visit, plus usually 2-3 pages of info about developmental, social, and physical milestones for that month (or set of months now we are going less frequently). I also fill out a questionnaire online prior to going that more or less is a check off list of what she can/can't do, plus a place for me to list current feeding schedules and any questions I have. These can be printed out too.

Some other tips or things I love:

Our practice also has free podcasts for download on hot topics. The medical director of the practice usually does them. They are awesome and give me great quick info without making a call or doing a lot of research.

Okay, I love my pedi, but I still wish she did more stuff like this (the questionnaire, Q&A sessions, etc.)!
  • I hate the hand outs! Our old pedi would give me a hand out if I asked a question. Instead of answering he would throw hand outs to me. Or he'd tell me he would email me and never did. He was ridiculous!

  • we use the Nipissing District Developmental Screen at work, and the doctor uses it as well. I find it is pretty straightforward and easy to understand. I like using it with the clients I work with as it usually opens some conversation about what their child is doing and gives tips on how to work towards other milestones.

  • We get handouts and i like them. They write height/weight on them, give info on vaccines, first foods, and milestones. I read (almost) all the words.

  • @majwv8 Ooh that's awesome - I really like the sticker idea!  You guys have all given me lots of great tips :) I was going to make my own handouts, but I'm looking into the Bright Futures ones that are already pre-made.  Do you like them?

@lizzybizzy80 You also get Bright Futures handouts - do you like them?

  • @kelly422 I like them a lot, some of the advice is different than what I've read or done but it has some great info. Particularly for first timers like me!
