Terrified

So I knew I was a big baby, 10 lbs. but I was number 4. And i was a little late. Well my mom re-terrified me because she told me my older sisters were 3 weeks early and were around 8.5 lbs each. And my brother (the third) was 10lbs 10oz. My mom wasnt even a big hipped, made for baby birthing woman either and she did it without an epidural everytime even though two of us were back labor. Idk how she did it, and I don't know how I'm going to! Maybe my SO's skinny genese will kick in a little bit but HOLY SMOKES this is getting real.

  • I was almost a ten pound baby but my son was only 7lb 9oz full term. I too am slender and pushed him out in 30 mins with only one tiny tear. Don't worry so much!

  • I'm one of three- 10 even (2w late), 10lb10oz (me, 9 days early) and 9lb14oz (scheduled). DD was my first at 9lb10oz. My mom & I are both 5'6" and 130-135 size 4 or 6. I delivered dd vaginally without interventions other than my dr helping to turn her when her shoulder was stuck. Only 30ish min of pushing.

    big babies are great!

  • Try not to stress. Your body is designed to birth babies. I am an average sized woman (5'6" and 150 lbs) and I birthed an 8.1, 8.3 and 10.11 babies, all a handful of days late. Your baby, in most cases, will not grow a baby you can't birth. :)

  • Thanks these definitely make me feel better. It doesn't help that somehow almost every tv show I've been watching (friends, the office, the Cosby show, Fraser, etc) seems to be showing all the labor episodes! What timing they have

  • Apparently my uncle was a 10 pounder, my grandmothers next 4 kids were all under 5 pounds. Figure that one out.could be worse anyway, earlier this year a woman have birth naturally to a 15 pounder. She's probably giving cave tours now. :P

I don't think your body shape has anything to do with birthing a child. I have a friend who is overweight and "hippy" but her pelvis was narrow on the inside so she couldn't birth her 6.5 lb baby.

I am thinner and don't have big hips and my baby was over 8 lbs and my pelvis was too small. My mom had really small babies so I thought I would too. I also think that doesn't matter.

I also have a friend who is teeny tiny and successfully when drug free and didn't even tear and her babies were both 10 lb babies.

Every woman and every birth is different. You will do great and don't let anyone else scare you or tell you otherwise!

  • relax- really, it's fine.  Don't believe the hype or you will scare yourself and make delivery more difficult with those fears.  Change the name of this post to 'calm cool and collected'- and stop watching glorified media birth.  Watch a hypnobirthing vid instead- and read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth.  Above all other things, your body is designed specifically for this task.  It's fine, I promise you.  Getting kicked in the shins is 100x worse.

  • I was 9.5 lb baby and I expected to have a larger baby. I was a little surprised by my 7.5 lb full term boy. Seems to me the added weight doesn't make the head bigger and once the head is out typically everything is easy after that.

You come from a long line of women who can give birth. You can do it too. That thought helped me.
