TV

Ok, maybe this is a dumb FTM question, but why did the doctor say to avoid LO watching or being near the TV when it is on? I googled it and there were many reasons but nothing was scientifically proven so what is the reasoning your doctors have give? What are your opinions on the topic? My friends with kids/babies have never heard or been told this before. I watched TV before age 2 and turned out fine so why all the sudden?

Re: TV

  • My doctor hasn't mentioned it. I have heard it here and other places though.

  • I think it is best to limit screen time. A friend of mine is a speech pathologist and works with early intervention. They see a lot of kids who spend too much time infront of a tv, computer, video game system or tablet and are behind on speech, are not able to interact and lack imaginative play. a few min here are there are completely fine though!

  • I think few things are really scientifically proven when it comes to this sort of question. MH is very against LO watching any tv before the age of 2. I'm slightly more lenient and don't think it's the end of the world if LO catches a few minutes of tv every couple of days (so very little tv but not no tv at all).

As for the question of "why all of a sudden", I think it has to do with the findings of some of the studies recently done. Not "scientifically proven" but good enough for the AAP to change their recommendation to no tv before 2.
  • My doctor never brought it up that I can remember. I'm going with the recommendations of the AAP:

  • @sctiger I was JUST going to post that link. Great minds think alike :) OP, you can also go to the AAP website and there's lots of stuff on media.
  • It CAN be detrimental but there are things that are a lot easier to do as a FTM that prove much harder the second time around.  Neither of kids have a car seat in the middle even though the oldest did when he was a baby.  The baby watches tv because I've got an almost 4 year old who LOVES his tv.  Unless I don't spend time with them together, Q is going to be watching Rescue Bots as they roll to the rescue :)

I think it's important to always keep your kid and their particular needs, quirks and tendencies in mind.  LIke I said, my oldest loves tv.  We're a tv family but he also loves playing outside and would choose that when given the chance.

  • I had grand intentions of no TV until my DS was 2.  Well one day when he was about 18-20 months old, I had to make dinner with a busy toddler at my feet.  Hello "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse"!

With DD, the TV is on often.  I always have the news or Today on in the morning.  DS watches a show or two during the day.  DD may glance at the TV every once in a while, but I rarely catch her watching.  Her toys and crazy brother are much more entertaining at this point.  I figure that's stimulation enough!
