Rice cereal with formula...

A few days ago I had posted about feeding my twins formula mixed with rice cereal. I mixed one tsp rice cereal in 4 oz formula (as my pediatrician adviced), but my babies had a hard time drinking the milk. Later, I went and brought medium flow nipples for them and both of them seemed to take the formula nicely. This morning when I fed them formula with rice cereal, none of them wanted to have it. I checked the nipple flow and it seemed to stop every now and then because of the rice cereal. Later I washed the nipple and gave them again, but none of them wanted to take it. Now I'm confused if they don't like the taste or if they are having a hard time sucking the milk.

I use Evenflo BPA free Classic Glass bottles and I switched to medium flow nipples which are meant for 3-6 months old. My twins are 4 months old. Should I buy fast flow nipples which are meant for 6+ months old? Or should I just drop the idea of feeding them formula with rice and suck up them spitting so much. I don't know if my preparation is wrong.

This is how I prepare their formula - I add one tsp of rice cereal to 4 oz water. Mix it well and then add the formula and mix it. Later, I give it to the twins. Is this wrong? Or Am I suppose to first mix the rice cereal in water, the way one would when they feed rice cereal as solids to their baby? I'm confused because the first time they seemed to have liked it and they seemed content too after the feed. They both burped well and didn't spit up as much as they would with just the formula.

Please suggest. Thank you!

Re: Rice cereal with formula...

  • Have you tried getting them the formula that has rice starch already added to it? It isn't as thick as adding the rice cereal to it, but it similarly helps with the spit up.

  • I missed earlier posts - are they in pain from spitting up? If they are in pain, then I'd talk to your pedi. If they're just happy spitters (all three of mine are/were happy spitters) then I wouldn't add rice cereal. When added to a bottle, it can become a choking hazard, so the pros (of alleviating pain associated with spit up) should outweigh the cons (choking hazard, digestive issues, constipation).

  • They are happy spitters. My pediatrician suggested to add rice cereal because there are times when my babies spit a lot of milk. She didn't seemed concerned because they are growing and gaining weight. Then I guess I should just stop trying and let them spit. I can't take the risk of them going through so much pain. Thanks for providing more information on this carrotcake06.
  • If you do decide to continue with the rice cereal, variable flow nipples work best. It has a small "X" shape instead of a regular hole.

  • honestly, the longer the cereal is in the water the more puffed up it gets (until its fully saturated)
Go with the X or Y cut nipple (I wouldn't cut it myself as that can cause problems with the integrity of the nipple.
I usually add the cereal right before feeding and my boys are able to drink through level 2 and 3 Dr Browns nipples (we're at the same amount of cereal as you)

  • I actually cut the nipples a bit so they were wider, in an X cut, and worked for me.

  • katiebenes, thank you so much. I tried with dr. Brown nipples and my girl seemed happy drinking her milk. It's a coincidence because the other day my hubby brought dr. Brown nipples because he couldn't find any evenflo nipples. I guess I'll give my twins rice cereal as my daughter is going through a hard time. She's no more a happy spitter. She's more fussy and crabby now. I can't bear seeing her in so much pain. Thank you so much katiebenes.
  • Can you try spoon feeding? At our 4 month Appt? our pediatrician said we could try first foods anytime the twins seem ready. We spoon fed them rice cereal mixed with breast milk (1tbsp cereal to 3tbs milk) for the first time this week. They will be 5 months next week. Babycenter.com has a great food guideline page for babies!
  • I was told you needed the faster flow nipples if adding the rice cereal. While they're for a higher age group the opening is larger which will allow the cereal to flow without clogging it up.
