NBR: ditching cable

Those of you who have ditched cable for Hulu or Netflix, can you ttm about your experience?

Pros / cons?
Have you tried hulu and Netflix and found one better than the other?
If you're a sports fan, how do you watch games?

We are considering switching since we figured out it can save us about $1500 per year!

Re: NBR: ditching cable

  • We recently got rid of our cable, just a couple weeks ago in fact.  We have Amazon prime & Netflix & we're soooo much happier with our decision.  My only regret is that we didn't switch sooner.  There's so much more variety & you aren't a slave to setting your DVR to catch your favorite shows.  Highly recommend!

With Hulu +, Amazon, & Netflix you can do a free trial...give it a go & see what you think.  Nothing to lose! :)

  • Loading the player...
  • We talked about this recently and the only thing holding us back is not having ESPN and other sports channels.

Supposedly, Roku is a good option and you can get some live sports.

If we did it, we'd do Roku + Hulu Plus + Netflix + Apple TV. I think.

  • Now I am curious too... Can you watch on your tv or do you have to watch on your iPad or tablet?

We have a xbox 360 and watch it on our tv. I'm pretty sure if you have a game console with internet connection you can watch it on your tv that way. Or they have the smart tv's now that you can watch Netflix right from your tv without a game console.
  • Do a free trial of each and see if you can survive. We havent had cable for years.

Dh and I were just talking about this. Aside from 2 sports channels, we dvr everything else. I want to find out if there is a sports package we can keep and switch over to netflix

Sports is our biggest challenge. Everything else (shows, hgtv) we can get either online or through netflix.
  • We have a blu ray player that has wifi built into it that we got at best buy for $100. We don't have cable and so we do netflix and hulu. Netflix is nice cause there are no commercials and it's easier to get to the shows we are recently watching. But Hulu has better options for newer shows, has commercials, and it takes a little longer to get to the shows.
As far as sports, I have no advice cause we aren't sports watchers. Sorry! But we love netflix!

  • We have a roku and subscribe to amazon prime, netflix and hulu. I like hulu best because I like to watch current shows. DH likes netflix because he prefers movies.

Our Blu ray and gaming consoles will stream all that stuff too, but the roku was gifted to us and has some really neat content and channels.

We aren't into sports really so I have no advice for that.

  • I am tempted to do this, we have 10 months left on our Directv contract.... maybe after it's over!

  • We aren't sports people so we ditched cable two years ago. We have Netflix and watch it on tv through the ps3. We were done with cable and the cost. I don't miss it.

We have roku, do a monthly subscription to Netflix and then did a lifetime subscription to Playon (Google it). Playon give you access to shows on the internet so you get Hulu without paying for Hulu plus, CBS, YouTube, HGTV, and some sports. We also do a yearly subscription to Fox Soccer so DH can watch soccer games on the TV or through Playon on the roku. Saves us a ton of money and we have 90% of what we had with cable plus a lot of things we didn't have with cable. I like that we can have Pandora and YouTube on the tv.

  • We haven't ditched cable altogether but we did significantly downsize. We used to have AT&T but their internet speeds around here sucked! So we switched to comcast to get the better internet and we have a limited basic cable subscription. So basically all the over the air channels (we live in a heavily wooded area and can't get any type of antenna reception in our house including radio) and then the discovery/a&e/history channels. We get comedy central and a few others. No more DVR or HD. We only pay $50 a month for it and that includes the internet so it's a pretty good deal. Oh and we get HBO free for 2 years. Everything else we watch online including any current shows we may have missed when they aired. We just log into the channels website. We have an Apple Mini computer hooked to the tv but you could probably use any spare computer if your tv has an HDMI input. We have Netflix and Amazon Prime and use those occasionally too.
I love not being a slave to the DVR and find that we watch way less TV and I'm ok with that! :)

  • The ONLY reason we have cable now is because it is included in our rent. In our old apartment we did not have cable.

We have Netflix and love it. We go back and forth between streaming only and getting two DVDs at a time. My mom had Hulu and Netflix at one point and opted to stick with Netflix only. DH is a college sports fan and when he cannot find the game on TV, he finds it online (usually JustinTV). There are a lot of shows that you can find online (i.e. Game of Thrones, Girls, etc) without having to pay for cable. I used to call DH a cheapskate for not wanting to get cable but honestly, we never missed any of our shows because of it. Good luck!
I could've written this. It's an adjustment but the savings are amazing.
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • We save about 70.00 a month by ditching cable and going with Hulu plus, netflix, and amazon prime. They all have their purposes, like hulu has more current shows and netflix doesn't have commercials, but we get to watch almost all of what we could if we had cable. We also have a set of rabbit ear antennas that pick up whatever is broadcast locally over the air so we are pretty well set :).
